One Hundred Push Ups

Yup i do a full motion from top to bottom :) really need to strengthen my triceps to get the 100 !

100 is a pretty crazy number. Couple of guys I used to work with tried this. One chap was about 5'7" and was doing alright, the other chap had recently recovered from 2 broken wrists. I seem to remember that it was early 80s they started to flag.

Ever tried hindu pressups? I find them rather good as well.

Good luck with the hundred jonnyGeeee!

I find it quite amazing how many pushups people can do without having trained them for a long time. Are you actually doing a proper nice and controlled full up and down till your nose touches the floor. Are these numbers in one sitting with no resting between pushups?

From what I have seen in gyms and generally, when it comes to pushups, pullups and chinups, 80% of people do them half arsed.

As mentioned size etc..

I'm roughly 13 stone and about 6'3, I managed 16 - and that was at a real push (No pun intended :p).

My nose didn't touch the floor, but my dad, who was a drill sergeant in the air force for 10 years, told me I should keep my head up - looking forward.

My arms were going from straight out in front of me on the floor, shoulder width apart, going down to a 90 degree angle, then back up. No breaks inbetween, but the last one was a struggle.

I assume this is a decent form?

That is exactly how you should do them.

Im about the same height weight as you ciphon. I go down until my nose touches the floor. Elbows at right angle was keeping my nose about 4-5 inches from the floor. I think that as long as you are not using momentum and just bumping up and down, you should be fine.

Pushups are harder for heavier and/or taller people as a) they have extra bulk to push and/or b) they have further to go up and down (longer arms)

In GENERAL - someone at 5'10" and 10st should be able to rattle out pushups in comparison to someone thats 6'6'' and 15st.

Well, I just finished day one of week one, and it was hard! I admit that the last set (9) was a little poor, and wouldn't be classed as full push ups.. but I just couldn't lift myself!

My arms, chest, and shoulders all feel completely knackered.

I think the initial test hit me harder than I'd thought, as soon as I started today I could feel an ache in my arms already.

Maybe I'll fair better on Wednesday for day two week one after a days rest tomorrow.

Anyone of the others who said they'd give this a go manage?

well done Ciphon :)
just did w3d2, totalled up to 120 in about 6 mins overall. might rest tomorrow see how they feel.

think I'm gonna give this a go, I've always been fat (was 16st at about 5'8" when I was 17), but just recently I have lost a fair bit of weight with no real effort (now teetering on 14 st, and I'm about 6'1" these days)
Despite being less fat , I also feel a lot less fit than I used to (rode BMX 4-12 hours a day in those days!).
Just tried the initial test and couldn't even do 1, but that was with my left arm pinned to my side because my room is too cluttered. not sure I could do one anyway, my arms are fine, but I cant keep my back straight enough.
Gonna give it a go tomorrow in less confined space, hoping to make at least 10 for a first go

I'm 6'5 ~14.5st (was lighter than this) and have always struggled with push ups - and upper body strength in general. My legs are fairly toned and strong but my arms are weedy.

I'm going to try and do this, I've been told my form is pretty good but I can barely get to 10 reps per set (that was a few months back).

Question for the experts:
The application I downloaded for my Android phone to track this is called "DGMT" - Drop and give me twenty. It has a mode where my nose/chin touches the screen, it counts 1 - is this really how low you have to go? For me that's way beyond 90 degrees elbow angle (with hands spaced shoulder-width apart in front of me) and I really struggle to get back up. Also I find my problem area is my back which begins to trouble me 8-10 reps in.

Your back will probably be sore due to having a poor core. Try tensing your stomach muscles a bit as you do the push-ups to help support your back.

As I say, being tall makes it harder.

I started this a while ago. My first effort was a measly 8.

I can do around 30-40 now with good form. Its a slog but hey
no pain no gain.

I did start this this week but I sprained my ankle at work and its a bit painful to do them properly. Going to leave it till next monday I think.

the most amazing thing im finding is how ridiculously light a lot of people in this thread are! 6'3 and 13 stone?? 6'5 14.5 stone??? Man that is weedy :D I was 14 stone at 6'3 at 14/15 and was put on protein shakes as my coaches/trainers were concerned that I couldn't sustain a healthy weight due to the amount of cardio I was doing.

I'm now 6'4 and 18 stone. Im carrying about half a stone of excess weight atm (having just lost 2 stone in the past 12 weeks), if i got below 17 stone i'd have to lose a lot of muscle mass and I'm not exactly a body builder. I'd look positively unhealthy with an adult (read: filled out) body and less than 17 stone.

Maybe i just have a very heavy frame, as no one believes me when i say i'm as heavy as I am

With press ups, try and do it with press up bars. I have the following:

These allow you to drop FAR lower and work you FAR harder. I can only manage about 25 with these on a good day but can hit 50+ with normal pressups fairly comfortably (except for my dodgy wrist that i broke a few years ago starts to hurt). I've not tried to do the 100 challenge though as i dont think the wrist would appreciate it!

I really need to start doing this again, it was working well for me, I got to the 5th week then went on a two week bender in Poland. That was the end of the push ups for a while.

ive got those handles, but grey. they are great for my wrist. If it wasnt for handles i'd have to do them on my knuckles instead
