I'm not sure. They're breaking the law by owning one anyway, I think they're just covering their asses.

It makes for an interesting challenge :) Shooting an air-driven pellet is so much different to a real gunshot.

I still don't see the problem with it

Whats the challenge about firing a gun? Surely it's more challenging to hit something with a pellet gun? I'd have figured it required more skill.

You take away people in sports clubs firing real guns with real ammo, there's less chance of these guns getting into general circulation.

Say you want to commit a crime with a gun. Do you...

a) steal gun from gun club
b) steal gun from gun club member
c) obtain illegal gun for minimal effort / cost

?

1) The gangstas already have their guns

2) You don't have to let them carry around, just let the gun club store them securely? :)

The more guns in existance the cheaper the third option will be.

See above :)

I'd like to see us go one step further and ban all replica guns, air pistols and BB guns included.

Replicas yes, the rest? Too far IMO

I support the laws regarding handguns, and amnesties; the less guns out there the better imo. Naturally it'll not stop some people illegaly possessing and using guns but it's a start. I also think bb and other dangerous 'toys' designed for violent means should be banned.

Could you explain your logic please? I can't really see any link between the quite unbelievably strictly-regulated supply of legal firearms in this country and the vast majority of illegal ones?

Well without a law there isn't a crime. Unless you'd like to clarify.

Why do you assume gun crime wouldn't be even higher if they were still legal?

If guns were still legal, the next Dunblane would only have been a matter of time.. that alone justifies the ban for me.

I would ban airguns to stop the MANY incidents where people are shot - including in the eye, in the head etc - without guns, those incidents don't happen.

And what are they doing with the gun amnesty in Manchester?

Hand in a gun and get a free boxing match ticket, from Frank Warren.

If this isnt rewarding criminals I dont know what is.

a gun is worth £250 atleast on the black market, seems a bit of a let down to me.

Those who are handing in guns will be people who keep them for protection or kept theirs after the ban and have become afraid of the harsh penalties.

The law with regards to guns is flawed, most guns have even been stolen or smuggled in, how do you get those? or stop them getting their hands on them? those who want firearms, can always get them somehow.

I'm off to live in California soon, who have one of the toughest gun laws in the country. I will be allowed to own a small handgun or rifle, i will not be allowed anything better without an assault weapons license which are harder to get than a Frenchman with balls. California however still has a reasonably high gun crime rate. On the other hand, in certain states, when i could buy a handgun, i could also buy an AK47, still you don't see such huge gun crimes figures. The fact is, criminals rarely legally posess guns (bit of a traceable bit of evidence no?) and males in particular have a fascination with weapons. The American constitution allows people to protect themselves with a gun, you'd expect a HUGE gun crime rate? it's not THAT bad really, the majority of weapons used in American crimes have been stolen from legal owners who either don't use proper safety measures or aren't able to make it 100% impossible to steal.

Still, i'm going to sleep safer at night knowing next to me, there's a 9mm and i'm perfectly within my rights to shoot anybody breaking in without asking a second question.

If guns are still manufactured and sold legally in large amounts, there's more guns to go on the black market, more guns out there to be stolen...

Arty, Kanes makes my point wonderfully well here :)

Have you seen Bowling for Columbine? If you haven't then I suggest you watch it , you might find it interesting.

I *may* be wrong, but I believe that the main source of illegal guns in this country is not from ones stolen from gun clubs / legal owners (there are some pretty tight laws on security for these firearms, as there absolutely should be) or legal retailers, but rather imported illegally.

I'm sorry, I'm just not convinced that ever-stricter laws for the legal owners of guns will really make much of a difference to the illegal trade - the handgun ban certainly didn't :(

The laws on legally owning a gun in America are vastly more relaxed than here - I know people who have simply gone out, ordered a handgun at a shop and received it within 24 hours. There is no way you could do that here with the amount of (necessary) bureaucracy you are forced to go through to legally own a gun :)
