Have things moved on much since I got my Onkyo 876 ? I don't need network ...

I do need 2x HDMI out...

Was thinking of treating myself for Christmas...

The 2nd HDMI out on the 2300 is a mirror of the first, therefore not capable of running a separate source from the first. You'd need a 4200 or better for that I believe.

The 2300 would be a step or two down in terms of sound quality as well I think. Whilst being feature packed, it still is an entry level receiver.

What speakers do you run, OP?

Hdmi Main goes to my TV and HDMI sub goes to my Projector....

Unless you want Dolby Atmos/DTS-X (You need ceiling speakers or speakers that direct sound upwards from the listening height in addition to what you already have AFAIK) Atmos blu-ray/Ultra HD software is growing all the time right now. DTS-X is a bit slow getting off the ground. 4K passthrough is something you may also need.

THX (if you want that still) You may be looking at another Onkyo.

Either way an upgrade with the above features & a step-up in sound quality isn't going to be cheap.

I don't need 4K just yet...I'm waiting as my Panny Plasma is just dandy until oled comes down in price...

I'm glad I started thius thread...As Its looking to me that an Upgrade might not be needed...

Budget, such that we don't suggest a Trinnov?

I got my Onkyo for £599 from RS...So max budegt of £700 ish

For Atmos you either need a pair or more of ceiling speakers or upfiring speakers which sit on your front LR.

Not sure about streaming as I prefer physical media.

My speakers are in the wall...

By the looks of it...I only really need to upgrade for 4K support...something I'm not doing for the foreseeable future..

All the other features like network and the like I just won't use...

Most if my viewing is Netflix, Amazon prime as one of these stream atmos there seemed to be no reason to upgrade...u less I'm missing something obvious...

If you're not buying into 4k then upgrading to recent avrs is pointless. If you do want to upgrade then you need to be looking at high end avrs from the pre 4k era. Something that cost 5k 10 years ago is still a high end avr sound quality wise. The only issue then is the lack of more modern audio features.

Yeah...I'll get 4K when I see a point to it...and OLED is mainstream...

I'll keep my 876 for now I'm happy with it...it's been a fantastic purchase. And still sounds great.

Think I'm going to setup 7.1 with my 876 for something to do...

Any speakers come to mind to compliment the monitor audio bronze in wall at the FRC channels ?

Woke up this morning and my 876 wont power on on....

The front Led is flashing...when I power on it comes on fir a few seconds then goes off...

I have read the manual and disconnected everything..I'm now waiting an hour until powering it on again....

Fingers crossed it comes back on....:(

Could you get it repaired ?

I guess so but depending on whats wrong with it it might not be worth it.

I'm taking into a shop on Monday and they are charging me £48 to take a look and let me know what what what....They then take this sum of 48 off the repair cost.

Flashing led is protect mode. Could be a number of reasons but if you've pulled all your cables and it's still doing it then I would assume something inside has popped. See if you can get it repaired would be my first port of call.

Amplification has gone backwards and prices have gone up. to buy an av amp with better amplification than the 876 is going to cost you at least a grand plus and probably more. However, the sheer amount of features they are packing in these days might well make up for that. Guess it depends if you really need that sort of sonic ability - I find I dont, never have time for it these days.

Maybe see if you can arrange some home demos ofnkit at various price points?

yeah the weight and heft and sound of the Onkyo is something I like...I'll come back and let you know whats what on Monday. I'm sure I can manage with my TV speakers until then ( Everything sound pants) lol

Unless there's a fairly major short across one of the speaker terminals then this sounds like an issue with the power getting to the relay that switches on the main power transformer. Could be a dead transistor or a degraded circuit board track. Either way, it's very unlikely to fix itself. Electrical faults rarely do.

If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't mind the work involved, then doing a DIY repair is possible. If the amp really is dead then you've little to lose at this stage. Be warned though, this isn't for the faint hearted.

Changing for a new/newer amp is the other option. Whilst newer amps have gained a lot of features since your 876 was launched, and those features have filtered down to lower priced models too, what hasn't changed is the cost of power.

I feel its my duty to at least try and give the 876 another chance..Its been my hub of my cinema since it was built and its never missed a beat.

Wow its nearly been a decade in December when I started building it!

48 quid to have her checked out is a must!

But if the amp ticks all his boxes and does what he wants they it would be silly to get rid of and spend £800 on a new amp when he knows his old one is better.

My Denon AVC-A10SE does everything I want,powerfully,DTS,7.1,I'm the 2nd owner and my friend purchased it brand new with the speakers (which I have also) and has never had the volume past a quarter (he dosent like loud music) so I know 100% the amp is perfect,if it broke down I would get it repaired as I love the sound it produces as I think the older amps give a better sound than the new ones.

Yeah mate . Definitely don’t want to downgrade :)

I have had the 876 unplugged for the last couple of days ....I woke up this morning ready to take it to the repair man and thought I would check one last time....

I plugged it in to power ( no other connections) and it powered on and stayed on!

I have no idea why...when I spoke to the repair guy he did mention leaving it off for at least 24 hours...

Anyway it's back up and running....

The only explanation is that a few days back we had a couple of brown outs and maybe this did something? The amp is on a surge protector but I may now put it on a UPS

its more likely a sign of components going EOL - caps drying out for example. If it does it again, it'd still send it in to be looked at; they're old and they run hot - components will degenerate in there. Luckily the only major issues ive had with my 805 was the display stopped working, but that's just a case of replacing two resistors. My component video board is also fried but i never use component so whatever :p

Watched TV all last night...( River Monsters on Netflix)

Woke up this morning....just powered on and same thing flashing red LED when powering on

Thought I'd cracked it :(

Not wanting to wait 10 days on a diagnosis  I went home and ordered a Denon AVR -X4400H

Oops :p

Sounds great even uncalibrated, the Spotify connect is great and dare I say it I feel no remorse for my 876...:o

Things have moved on...only thing is now looks like I'll be upgrading my speakers and TV...:p

Might aswell go go Dolby Atmos ( Netflix and Amazon support it) I can use my Monitor Audio 45's for the height speakers I have...And get some Monitor Audio FX for the sides and rears...

Ten years is a decent cycle for home cinema:p...out with the old and all that !

The Denon has two Sub outs so I might buy another BK Gemini II FOR SHNICKS AND SNIGGLES :p
