The 2nd HDMI out on the 2300 is a mirror of the first, therefore not capable of running a separate source from the first. You'd need a 4200 or better for that I believe.
The 2300 would be a step or two down in terms of sound quality as well I think. Whilst being feature packed, it still is an entry level receiver.
What speakers do you run, OP?
Unless you want Dolby Atmos/DTS-X (You need ceiling speakers or speakers that direct sound upwards from the listening height in addition to what you already have AFAIK) Atmos blu-ray/Ultra HD software is growing all the time right now. DTS-X is a bit slow getting off the ground. 4K passthrough is something you may also need.
THX (if you want that still) You may be looking at another Onkyo.
Either way an upgrade with the above features & a step-up in sound quality isn't going to be cheap.
Budget, such that we don't suggest a Trinnov?
Hmm at that price range you're really not going to be upgrading in terms of sound quality, just features.
You really need a budget of 1k+ to get a worthwhile upgrade.
For Atmos you either need a pair or more of ceiling speakers or upfiring speakers which sit on your front LR.
Not sure about streaming as I prefer physical media.
If you're not buying into 4k then upgrading to recent avrs is pointless. If you do want to upgrade then you need to be looking at high end avrs from the pre 4k era. Something that cost 5k 10 years ago is still a high end avr sound quality wise. The only issue then is the lack of more modern audio features.
If it were me I would stick with the bronze series. As they're only surrounds you can technically use any speakers though...
His amp has a problem, how is a pre amp going to help ?
Not everyone wants/needs a power amp when ever hey need a new amp.
Could you get it repaired ?
Flashing led is protect mode. Could be a number of reasons but if you've pulled all your cables and it's still doing it then I would assume something inside has popped. See if you can get it repaired would be my first port of call.
Amplification has gone backwards and prices have gone up. to buy an av amp with better amplification than the 876 is going to cost you at least a grand plus and probably more. However, the sheer amount of features they are packing in these days might well make up for that. Guess it depends if you really need that sort of sonic ability - I find I dont, never have time for it these days.
Maybe see if you can arrange some home demos ofnkit at various price points?
Unless there's a fairly major short across one of the speaker terminals then this sounds like an issue with the power getting to the relay that switches on the main power transformer. Could be a dead transistor or a degraded circuit board track. Either way, it's very unlikely to fix itself. Electrical faults rarely do.
If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't mind the work involved, then doing a DIY repair is possible. If the amp really is dead then you've little to lose at this stage. Be warned though, this isn't for the faint hearted.
Changing for a new/newer amp is the other option. Whilst newer amps have gained a lot of features since your 876 was launched, and those features have filtered down to lower priced models too, what hasn't changed is the cost of power.
But if the amp ticks all his boxes and does what he wants they it would be silly to get rid of and spend £800 on a new amp when he knows his old one is better.
My Denon AVC-A10SE does everything I want,powerfully,DTS,7.1,I'm the 2nd owner and my friend purchased it brand new with the speakers (which I have also) and has never had the volume past a quarter (he dosent like loud music) so I know 100% the amp is perfect,if it broke down I would get it repaired as I love the sound it produces as I think the older amps give a better sound than the new ones.
its more likely a sign of components going EOL - caps drying out for example. If it does it again, it'd still send it in to be looked at; they're old and they run hot - components will degenerate in there. Luckily the only major issues ive had with my 805 was the display stopped working, but that's just a case of replacing two resistors. My component video board is also fried but i never use component so whatever![]()
