I don't really game online much these days, but the past few weeks I've been I have been dabbling in multiplayer.

One this that immediately strikes me is that I used to play a lot when I was younger and I don't remember people being this abusive?

Such rhetoric as "I hope you die of cancer" isn't uncommon. In fact the language of the average gamer from my recent experience is that of someone with learning or behavioural disabilities, or worse having suffered abuse or serious bullying.

Stick people behind the safety and anonymity of a keyboard and they become ‘double hard b******s’.

Am I just getting old or are people getting worse?
 
Depends what you're playing but back when you and probably I played games like counterstrike etc it was a highly restricted group, had to afford the hardware, the dial up / ISDN or if you were very lucky broadband. These days anyone can jump in and do it for a couple of hundred quid and that includes a lot of kids who otherwise wouldn't have bothered.

I tend to play only with other org mates or OCUK people I have on steam these days, means I've got people who are there to have fun, rather than throw abuse and who wont' spit the dummy if by some fluke I manage to win !

If you think it's bad on PC don't go near Xbox live or PS network, it's just simply incredible how bad it's gotten.
 
Nope it didn't used to be like that. I remember playing starcraft 1 online and some games would just be chatting with the other person about where we're from, football etc. Kids these days have 0 respect or etiquette.
 
Yup it happens in BF 4 A LOT! Every single game guaranteed to get some lovely rage :D I love it, I just find it amazing that people get sooooooo angry over a game lol

Best of all is typing back one liners that makes them rage even more, they always bite! :p

On the plus side if those comments are aimed at you it means you're doing a good job.

There's been a few times were people stop playing and just **** each other off :D.

Awesomenauts because it's quick and easy.

You only have to dip in to the general chat room (in-game) to see the issue first-hand. The devs do moderate but they can't be there 24/7.
 
I think your getting a bit old for it lol

It's just words it happens a lot on CS most I think people do it to psych you out and make you mad so ur off your game.

It happens in sports when I played rugby they do similar stuff but just call it sledging maybe not say I hope u get cancer but something not to far off at times

I understand but that's face-to-face. I played rugby for years and if you've the balls to say it to my face, then that's fine.

But you're probably right about getting too old for it, that was my suspicion. :)

Im 21 and the utter rubbish that comes out of the mounts of people, mainly younger people unfortunately does disappoint me that they have nothing much better to do than sit and shout at a screen because you clicked a button faster than them.

I swear like the rest of us and have the banter like the rest of us, but i would never wish you to get cancer. That's just called being a ****.

You are never to old to game. Rock on and enjoy, you will find a good group of lads who have a lot of fun at some point.

I already do and we go down the pub together!

But I hear you, perhaps I need to either stick to my stead SP or when it comes to MP play with OcUKers.

Whilst that is true I don't understand teammates abusing each other so consistently, it never helps you win just causes people distress and makes them play worse.

On a side note I got killed by this twitch streamer on h1z1 who shouted a minute long rant at me (it was so loud I couldn't understand most of it) though there was lots of racism and swearing.

Anyway I checked out his channel which I bet he wanted just to see who he was and he pretty much shouted at everyone he came across foaming at the mouth. He had very little followers but is this what passes for entertainment nowadays the guy obviously was a borderline psychotic. Not sure why twitch allow these kinds of people to stream and make money.

Yeah man, there are always a lot of people here playing a lot of games :D you should not find yourself struggling to get into a group play :D

The added ability for everyone to easily stream just makes people play on fake personas and act even worse unfortunately.

If you can hide your identity people will generally act like dicks.

Oddly it's usually the worst bloody player on the team too.

Yeah always wanting to divert attention from himself or blame others, quite a common tactic which can work if the team are a bit gullible.
 
One thing I want to point out that todays games use and that's team play. Or at least your solo rank is based on team play (MMR). Back when we didn't have ranks we didn't have trash talk because we didn't care if we lost, because it was normally down to ourselves. Now it's heavily focused on if you win or lose games, not at how well you do during that game. It's what annoys me and I think I was a nice gamer but I'm just not any more. When someone on my team can single handily swing the game to a loss I don't see why my skill should be affected in that. CS:GO and Dota 2 are strong examples of this.

You have to be so good you can actually solo carry the game (so be better than the other team as well). Sure you can play unranked...but it's still matchmaking so it's still ranked.
