Online Poker

The two main things I have learned playing poker

  • Be aggressive - raise more than you call, you will win with rubbish hands and also get paid when you have good ones.
  • Don't be afraid to lose - as platinum87 said losing calls can still be good calls. If you make more good calls than bad you will win more than lose.

The best advice I can give is to read: Doyle Brunson's super system: a course in power poker.
Doyle Brunson is the god father of poker and his book is considered the Bible by EVERYONE. I think a few here might be beginners (im no pro YET!! but maybe this can help you if you dont get the book - which you should...)

Always be thinking: Your Position, your cards, player(s) your up against.
And by "your cards" i mean: Think what cards you have, what cards you think your opponent(s) have. What cards your opponent(s) think you have.

This should be plenty enough to keep your brain very busy at the start.

super system has had it's day and is a long way from the best for an online player

I have that book but I don't think many of the top online pros would consider it the best really. It doesn't divulge into hand reading, and a lot of the book covers other types of poker which doesn't help the 95% that just play hold'em.

If you are going to read any books then Dan Harringtons are the best, both his cash and touney ones. Better yet, sign up to something like leggo poker or poker savvy. Poker training sites with videos are the best way off of the tables to learn.

Harringtion for tourney but for cash game I would go with some of the Sklansky books

Only with credible hands! whilst in the early stages of a session!

that is true but you need to be able to walk before you can run... There are amazing books dan harrington's are one, Gus hanson's every hand aussie millions is great start to describe how pros think. Another reason why you should ready super system is most new players will read it (as it is the bible) then not read another book and thats how they will play to the letter. You can often spot these folks especially live and you can change your tactics to milk them.

Wow, I am so done with Full Tilt, deleted my card off it. I have seen some unreal stuff on there. Morons shoving PATHETIC hands (pretty much any hand with an Ace) against my monster hands, and hitting on the last card. It can't be coincidence, seriously!

I'm taking a break, got some poker books to read, but when I next deposit it will be pokerstars as the 50/fifty games seem interesting.

Welcome to variance, enjoy your stay.

Lol. I havn't really been depositing much at a time so I don't have any leeway for downswings. Next payday I intend to deposit a decent bankroll and try not to rinse it.

His books are very good ,I used a book called something like small stakes limit poker or words to that effect.

Helped me win over £3K clear profit from a £3 stake. Got bored in the end and withdrew it. Still got hand history in pokeroffice.

Might have to dig that ouot for a luagh, is pokeroffice still going just out if interest?

What HUD you use?

Hold'em manager

We are in perfect agreement

Ok so firstly, calm down a bit, full tilt and pokerstars (any other site really) are all the same in terms of "moron players" i've had several people tell me they prefer full tilt to pokerstars (purely on players) and vice versa.

Trust me, there is no difference in the long run.

And on to people sucking out on the river etc, dont think of it like that.. Here's how you should think, as i've said..

You are all in on the flop vs 1 other person, pot is $200 (100 from each, no-one else was involved in hand)

Flop is 7c 8d 2h

You flip over KK, he flips over QQ

Now you are roughly 91% favourite at the point where you went all in.

So that means you have 91% equity, and thus $182 of that is yours.

$100 was already yours, and thus, you will make $82 on that hand

Ok so lets see what happens

Turn = 2
River = Q

You win $82..
He wins $-82

Obviously you need to factor in rake also

Anyway Ewaf, how much money will you deposit, and what will you play (limit/no limit/STT/MTT/ring? etc) I will tell you exactly what to do..

Also you need to play like 25,000 hands before you can even make a guess as to how you are actually doing.

Hi platinum,

When you put it like that, it makes me feel a lot better about the situation, knowing I played the hand right etc.

Basically at the moment I've just been playing FT, depositing $10 at a time (minimum). I played mainy $1 +rake sit and goes, and normally placed top 3, but found donks hitting their terrible pairs as mentioned. Recently I tried Full Tilt rush on demand. It's a $4 buy-in, and rules are here:

Normally about 350 people and top prize is $350ish. I found it suited me as I am quite good at blind stealing and playing in position etc, and the first one I played I made it to final table, finished 9th out of 350 people for nearly $30, my biggest single win (in online poker, won more live). I then went on to lose all of that playing the same game mode, but this was due to me playing till 6am because next door had a huge houseparty, so I was tired and made terrible decisions. I also think theres quite a lot of luck needed for that type of game mode.

When I next deposit I was thinking of trying Stars 50/fifty, as mentioned in this thread. (Basically double or nothing where you get a bonus depending on how many chips you have from what I can gather). I realise minimum depositing $10 is crap because it's not enough buyins and it's not uncommon to have large downswings.

Thanks for the help thus far, appreciate it

Well, I didn't want to deposit any money tonight, so did some 3D modelling instead:

My names Mark by the way ;)

I intend to hang on until pay day before I start a bankroll at Stars!

Well... This has been my worst poker weekend ever.

My most hated hand is now.......... a Pair of Aces (AA)!

This weekend I've received 3 pairs of aces (in three separate sessions). Upon receiving them I've either gone all in pre flop or raised the stakes rather high pre flop. In all three occasions I lost to someone who landed two pairs.

Not cool
