Online storage backup

Hello!!! I am planning to buy an online plan storage but I cannot decide which one. I am putting in balance capacity vs security. I am thinking of MediaFire which is 1TB for $2.49 and Google Drive 100GB $2.00 but at the checkout is more than that. I want to know how safe is mediafire as encryption and safe for the future.

Thank you.

burn DVD's, many DVD's.

but srs, I would say mediafire is not a safe storage even if its super cheap, and imo best option if you want something reliable, get yourself a small 2hdd nas raid for redundancy. it will cost you more upfront but then if something ever happens you have access to your hdd's and don't have to rely on someone else to host it

I do not want to put anything ilegal, I just want to backup my pictures from my mobiles on there. I want something which has a smaller probability to be attacked by hackers and also if Mediafire is involved in filesharing i suppose is a risky job despite the low price for the amount of storage they offer you. On the other hand if I want to share something from Google is a bit tricky and not as easy as Mediafire or Dropbox where you just copy the link and share it anywhere you like. Google likes to share the pictures or anything using Google+ which I am not really fond of it.

If the encryption is on the server, it isn't secure. Either you encrypt everything locally, before it goes up the wire, or come to terms with the idea that other people can access your data.

Local encryption is bit of hassle, since you have to store passwords somewhere, share passwords between computers, arrange to have files encrypt & backup without user intervention. Security and usability are usually in direct conflict.

Do you mean storage backup as in you want something for storage and backup, or just backup? If it's just backup then CrashPlan is fantastic (and includes encryption). I pay about £3.50 per month and it's truly unlimited. I have 250GB on there and a guy at work has 700GB++ and they haven't said a thing.

Anyone use Amazon Cloud? Seems reasonably cheap.

I had a look when I was after a backup solution, but it ends up being quite a bit more expensive compared to something like CrashPlan. Also, don't go Glacier - while it's super cheap to store stuff, if you ever have a disaster then it's going to cost a few hundred $ to get your data back (last time I looked & if you have a few hundred GB on there). You would also need to find some decent software that supports Amazon backup.

CrashPlan allows you to set your own private key and does the encryption for you so no need to worry about all that.

The personal version can be had for £4 per month.

I'm still considering going to 365 with the up and coming unlimited OneDrive, 60 mins of Skype and Office suite and dropping CrashPlan. So I'd have all the other stuff plus backup for just an extra 50p. Only problem is finding something as good as CrashPlan but for OneDrive - so encryption, versioning, etc.

-Edit
Just had a look and it's £6 per month for 365. Is there a code or a different link to get it for £4? The US one is about £4, but clicking buy on that just takes you to UK.
