OnLive Info and Discussion

I'm not saying it wont work, just that as far as I can see there are some limitations to get past before it does. I hope it is successful, it could mean a lot more people playing PC games if they no longer have to buy a high-end PC to run them.

Duran, Which ISP is it letting you download that much anyway?

sky. i dont think they will ever slow down my connection considering that i'm subscribed to all the tv packages they offer.

its just that i was expecting some excitement that i witnessed in other pc gaming communities. this is BIG news

Our internet system crippled when Wimbledon was on for 2 weeks, because everyone was watching it online, and these want to stream games over it, jesus, good luck. :D :D

This is what we'll have in the future I imagine, but in the short-term (5-10 years) no chance this will take off. For a start does this company really have the capital to get the service working all over the world, and provide a quality service to it's users. People complain just now about not owning their games on Steam, and this is another step beyond that, not to mention anything wrong with your connection at all means no gaming.

And are people like Nintendo, MS, Nvidia etc going to sit back and let something like this take off?

And

if you still cant find an ISP that offers unlimited internet these days, you are doing sth wrong...

I only have a 25GB limit per month and have no intention of changing ISP anytime soon, despite it being relatively expensive. Sometimes it is worth paying for a quality service.

I'd love to be proved wrong, I think it's an excellent idea. But I just can't see how they're going to get past some of the major pitfalls outlined above. It's one thing to get it working at GDC, a relatively closed conference where they can control quite a lot of the process, but quite another in the wild. We shall see, though.

Its a great idea but i can't see it working myself, perhaps the low end users will put up with it but us highend users who except the best with no keyboard / mouse input lag won't put up with this.

What about other uses of graphics cards and such? They just arent for games.

Plus there is always offline games to play.

What if someone is downloading stuff at your location, like shared houses?

Would be good for work though lol

I think it'll be huge, but only in countries with solid broadband infrastructures.

I think it would kill the modding community stone dead though :(

Which is another reason why I dont think it wont work. The main difference between pcs and console is its modding community. Dont think people would want to get rid of it.

Plus how are they going to charge for it? A monthly fee? Cant see it happening unless it only a few quid a month.

It wouldnt be worth the cost if you didnt buy many games.

What about saved games, profiles, etc. A lot of information to be kept.

Ah, I don't think they're really aiming it at current hardcore PC gamers though. This will mean anyone with any kind of PC at all will be able to play the entire range of high spec pc games without having to mess around with drivers or settings or whatever.

Never mind the cash barrier, it's aimed at breaking the low IQ barrier :D

This is just ASP for games - and that business model didn't live up to the hype either...

I think only time will tell. In my opinion this may work in certain parts of the world, but I would be suprised if it worked here in the UK. I hope it does because the concept looks great.

I'd be much more interested if they allowed UK Beta signups!

yeah what a shame, only usa testers.

Onlive will not replace my rig, well at least not in the near future, but the technology is very interesting. I put up a link for the live demonstration which includes showing games like crysis :P

I couldn't agree more, I actually enjoy the gradual upgrade process of high-end PC gaming, so I'd never want to go completely down the OnLive route. I suppose I'm not really the main target group for this though, it seems like it's more aimed at the console-gaming masses - hopefully it can tear some of them away from the PS3 and Xbox360 and back onto PC games :)
