Depends where you work, job before where I'm at now was a fairly informal affair and probably wouldn't have gone beyond a verbal warning... whereas where I am now (which is a big company) has strict discipline procedures and so far everyone who has done this have instantly got the boot*.
* We had 2 guys go at it in the middle of customers - real punches and blood. Marched out the door. Also had a temp throw a punch at someone but thats another story.

Apologise to them both as soon as possible. Don't let it become a big deal and sort it.
The advice about leaving, esp in this climate is stupid btw. If you have a good job at the moment, in something you enjoy then hold onto it no matter what.
I imagine the people telling you to bail are students or similar.

I haven't heard anything yet and I doubt I'll be called in for anything until Monday, don't worry I'll let you all know if I get fired.
Oh I forgot to say, there's now a rumour going round that my glasses got broke and I got glass in my eye

you could always play that up, phone up saying you've got to go to the eye hospital next week and maybe have a problem and won't be in for a couple weeks. They'll be so scared you might have been blinded on work property they'll be falling over themselves to offer you apologies, a raise and a new corner office(depending on the job).
wear a patch when you go back in and make sure you talk to the best combo of motherly type/hottie to try and get a sympathy shag....... it could all turn out ok
