Still feeling rather crestfallen and a bit of a muppet over the whole thing.
I used to work in retail as a checkout supervisor. It happens all the time, and you were lucky the store actually helped. Most stores don't own the machines and have no jurisdiction over them; although I guess they owned the CCTV to show you it being sucked back in.

LOL... what's wrong with cash?
Especially necessary in France, Germany and Switzerland as not everywhere accepts every form of card... and a lot of places don't accept card.
Regularly walk around with 2-300 chf (£140-210) and 100 Euro...
Not necessarily... might have to notify the bank and/or cash machine provider that it took the cash back... they may have to manually check the amounts... although it should be recorded in the check/fill up.

I left a debit card at Tesco's till once and realised as soon as I got to the car must have been about 3 mins max.
I went back in and went to the till I used and the woman said she'd got it and I thought brilliant.
She then said she'd destroyed it on the supervisors instruction all within 3 mins which surprised me so I had to get another one. I never knew Tesco could work so quick.

I did that a few years ago but twas only €50. Luckily, like you, no one was around and the machine took it back. Turned up back in my account the day after.
we're not in France. we have modern methods of payment here.
i guess the cash makes you feel good when you look at it.and then you remember you don't have much of it?

lol no... i used to be in UK mode... walking around with only plastic
baffled me how so few accepted card over here, got feddup of being refused sale/service over not having cash... now it's normal to me
And Switz is a much richer country than the UK, so it surprised me that they were behind in plastic usage
even if they do accept card... the %age is charged on top of the purchase price... the customer pays the fee, not the merchant
on the flip side... you average corner shop won't bat an eyelid at someone using a 1000chf note (~£700 in one note) to buy a pack of crisps...
I find cash helps me spend less... cash feels real, plastic feels imaginary
I remember the first time I had 3 grand in my hand in the uk after just selling a motorbike... i'd never held that much before and it felt like so much rather than just plugging in the card and typing in a pin at the dealership when i'd bought it
so yeah, i called it.
