Currently remortgaging, chap asked for passport as a form of ID... that expired last month.

No bother he says, driving license and a letter would be just as acceptable.. that expired 4 years ago!

Genuinely didn't realise. I dont recall getting a letter but theres no point arguing that. Never really used the card, not been pulled etc.

So upon looking it up, I cant renew online as my passport is now out too.

Went to post office and they cant help as it's too far gone so they gave me the old fashioned form and I retook my photos etc.

Do I need to be concerned about a fine? As in if I send the form off, they realise etc. Apparently they can issue you a £1000 fine, and some where I saw if the license is 2+years out you may be asked to retake a test? Surely not as it's only really the photo that needs updating, I still have an active license to drive?

Sorry for the long one, just wanted to set the scene as it were..

Any advice appreciated.

You may well get a fine, whilst they don’t in my own experience notify you your license is due to expire ( I had no notification when my license expired earlier this year) they do take note if you attempt to renew it a few years after it’s expiration....

I know someone who was fined (don’t recall the figure) for a license 18 months out of date.

I would expect to be fined by the police if pulled over etc. Do you k ow if your friend was done like that or directly by the DVLA as a response to it being out of date?

Thanks for the link, found that article too in my rampant search for answers :(

Can't imagine they can fine you for not renewing on time. What if you didn't want it for a few years and then needed it again so renewed?

Obviously being pulled over with an expired licence would be expected to trigger a fine!

I bet there are a few on here rushing to check driving license -- I don't think 4 years is a bit out of date - it's a bloody long time.

My friend has renewed his licence ( currently still in date mind :p) also has no in-date passport so had to do it by post. It's now been 4 weeks and his one still hasn't arrived!

Fairly sure it was on application to renew his license although he only did that after getting stopped (by the DVSA rather than the Police) and realising it was out of date.

I recall his employer got in hot water also because they plainly were not making sure their drivers licenses were upto date, he’s an hgv driver like me.

Mine was years out of date and I'd changed address.

I could do it online as my passport was valid but they certainly didn't say anything about it.

Given the current backlog his license will probably expire before he gets his new one but, so long as the DVLA have received and acknowledged receipt of his license application he can still drive under section 88 of the Road Traffic Act so long as there aren’t any reasons (medical for example) that he shouldn’t and so long as that application is under a year old.

Fortunately my local post office has the booth for doing it on the spot then they print you out a temporary slip until the new license arrives.

While if it expired ~4 years ago you wouldn't be in that group there was some kind of screw up with people like me in the first batch of people with the photo-license that don't get reminders - everyone else should as long as your details are up to date and correct.

Except for medical reasons your license hasn't been revoked so you are still entitled to drive though you may be fined in some circumstances due to failure to keep details current - generally not a problem as long as you can prove you've sent it off for updating.

I rang! They are very busy, on hold 30mins+.

Wanted to confirm what I needed to send anyway.

It's only the Photo essentially that needs renewing, you have 10 years a go on that, but the license itself is still fine, I guess at a certain age maybe 70 you need to renew the whole thing.

He did say though if caught driving and unable to produce a photo license, that may incur the fine but otherwise he didnt seem to think you can get fined for any other reason so... I'll just send and hope for the best

Bugger is because of covid theres a huge delay on these and passports, on a bit of a time limit with the remortgage :(

It's crazy as i have an old paper license and unless i move address it will stay that way.
The 10 year malarkey is another money grab from the government.

It's a form of photo ID. I don't think making you update it once a decade is all that unreasonable honestly! Likewise for the £14 fee (which is much cheaper than renewing a passport).

Just apply for the new license and go about your life as before.

For your own piece of mind, it's not been a problem for this long, it won't be a problem for a few weeks.

Just don't go out and buy a drift car and hoon it around roundabouts to draw attention to yourself in the meantime. :D

Mine expired late last year. I was notified by email and couldn’t renew online as my passport had expired so popped to the post office, had to be one with the booth and they did it.

The licence is still valid, only the card expires because of the photo. You wont get done for having no licence. They seem to be really slack on chasing people for this though.
