Open University

I've done S104. It was good fun, very interesting, but yes, quite full-on. Most people criticise it for having too much geology, and I'd agree with that assessment. There was certainly a disproportionate amount in there when I studied it. The other modules were great though.

Phew! Found the individual price hidden away on the OU website, it's £850 for the TU100 module. Nearly fell out of my office chair when i read robfosters price of £2362.00

I haven't done My Digital Life, but one of the members here uploaded some of the textbooks. I can't help but wonder; why do you specifically want to do this module? It's TU100 that's largely putting me off doing CS with the OU - a whole year studying something that, in all honesty, looks really dull, outdated and largely useless. Maybe I've misjudged (hopefully someone who has done it can comment), but it seems like a considerable waste of time and money to me. I do wonder what the assessments are like; is it possible to skip the countless hours of reading boring, over-simplified tech-history by working directly from the TMA's?

Bump!

So who is starting study in October with the OU?

I completed U116 back in June, but since then I have been struggling to decide what to study next, Im on a Open degree route but was hoping to stick to the same subjects.

The only other module that looks interesting at level 1 is S104 but I dont think I'm ready for it as I have heard its fairly intense compared to other level 1 modules.

I was hoping to try a 30 credit in environmental areas but the selection seems really poor.

I do hope they add more modules at level 1 in the near future, for now I'm going to prepare myself better to hopefully start S104 in January instead.

S104 has changed quite drastically since last year; you still receive all 8 books however only books 1-4 and the first 5 chapters of book 5 are compulsory (so an introductory multidisciplinary book, the first geology book, elementary physics, chemistry and a bit of biology). You then get to choose whether to continue with book 5 (what I found to be the more interesting part of the biology book) or study book 6 (mostly more geology) or 7 (more physics).

Book 8 isn't assessed at all and is merely there for completion. It sounds less intense than how it was previously structured but I think the intensity helped me better prepare for this year - I've already pretty much completed the first book of MST124 and have started on the first book of MST125.

My books for B203 arrived last week, first level two course! Not had an active module since June which has been a pain as it usually takes me a while to get back into the swing of studying!

It was a good job I saw this thread yesterday, as I hadn't noticed that the courses I want to do (L3 computing courses) have moved from their typical January / February start to an October start, with today being the last day to register.

Cue a speedy registration yesterday for TM354 (software engineering) and T320 (e-business technologies)!

:)

I am going into my 3rd year with OU doing Mechanical Design Engineering.

I have a maths exam from year 2 on 16th October, and the next modules start on 16th October too.

I am doing them without a gap to get through it all a bit quicker :)

I'm starting MT264 Designing applications with Visual Basic in October.

Same here, registered for it the other day.

Have my exam for M256 on Wednesday as well! Not feeling to confident with that at the minute though. Looking forward to finishing 5:30 Wednesday and having around 3 weeks of no studying what so ever. Been a while since I have had such a break. Have the week off as well so yey

Got my materials through for TU100 today.

Had a look through the first book. Tbh, I don't really think I'm going to have do that much work on this one. It all seems very basic stuff like explaining phishing emails!

Probably the fact that I'm quite experienced with computing helps, and I imagine newbies might benefit from it, but more experienced will breeze through it with ease.

It covers quite a lot in TU100, including some coding (in Sense/Scratch). It wasn't to bad. Remember it is a level one course and it isn't a single subject or path way, it is meant to cover a bunch of stuff and then you move onto a more specialised area with year two.

I've just finished 6 years at the OU and have been reliably informed I have attained my degree. I'm just waiting for the results, but I'm over the moon. It was not the easy option for me by any means, and I am so glad it's over.

I have a bachelors degree in maths, would it be feasible to do an MSc in a non-maths subject and one that I have no experience of? Say Advanced Networking or Computing?

Have my exam for M256 on Wednesday as well!

Is M256 one of the Java modules? The number sounds familiar... I think it's one I did a few years ago. I found it very strange writing code on paper!

I've got my exams early next month.

Hope the exam goes well... good luck!

I did it before the changes Sheff mentioned...

It was manageable as long as you studied smart. There wasn't an exam so all of your marks came from the online tests and tutor marked assignments. Whenever I had problems with something I wasn't particularly interested in I had a look at the assessment to see if it was covered. If it wasn't I skipped on ahead to the next bit. Of course, if I was having problems with something that I wanted to follow up in later modules I put a bit more effort into it.

Yeah it is, there are two, M250 and M256. M250 was writing lots of code on paper and I passed that one few months ago. M256 is all the theory based stuff really, the design principles and the how you get to coding stage. Finding M256 harder. My TMA results have been lower than previous ones apart from my last one that I nailed and that included a bunch of coding. So bored of revising now though, never ending! This is only the second exam I have to do since school so it feels so alien and finding a way in which is useful is difficult in itself.

M250 is a newer one I think.

I did M255 and M256 (at the same time after I decided the M255 course material looked straightforward enough).

Hello again.

I was hoping to start study in October, in particular S104 exploring science but I felt a bit nervous about starting it due to it looking quite a tough module.

I finished my last module U116 Back in May so it's been a while without studying and I'm feeling really under motivated without something keeping my brain working!

I work part time and study mainly for the interest in the subjects but hopefully it will help with future career prospects.

I just wanted to ask if anyone is currently studying S104 and how they are finding it, as I may take the plunge and start in January.

Thanks

Just do it! Your hard work will pay dividends in the sense of achievement alone. When you feel like lacking in motivation again, post here, I'll post more motivation :p

Do it, you won't regret it :)
