Opera Web Browser... eh?

wtf... look how low memory usage is in this comparison chart... even with 10 sites open http://techheadaches.blogspot.com/2006/07/look-at-memory-usage-in-internet.html

Erk... need to get to the bottom of this.

EDIT - It appears that article above was right... memory usage is well down when minimised... http://my.opera.com/mitchman2/blog/show.dml/167116

I moved over to Opera when they released v9, but then moved back to FF for v2. Still got them both installed, and I'd use them for different reasons... My favourite feature is the mouse gestures, so much more responsive than FF with plugin.

Ok i've done some decent speed-research and the reason it uses such varying (and sometimes large) amounts of memory is for cache, pre-fetching, and the way it renders pages... hence why it's so fast and responsive and such a pleasure to use. You can however change the amount of memory cache in the settings... at the moment mine is set to auto but can go as low as 4MB.

Lets face it... in a system, with 2GB+ RAM who cares if it uses a litte more when the end result is so good. You didn't but all that lovely expensive memory just to leave it all sitting idle did you? ;)

I love opera and currently have 6 tabs open and it is only using 62MB of RAM. But you guys are ruining this great browser by telling other people!! the secret to operas security is hardly anyone uses it don't ruin it, so sssshhhhh about how amazing it is. Plus you might turn in to one of those firefox zealots only with opera and that isn't good

Glad to find another Opera fan on here! Only a matter of time before the FF fanboys weigh in though.
I guess I'd be classed as an FF fanboy, as it is the first thing I install on a clean machine and the browser I encourage everybody to use if asked.

I have Opera 9 installed and have tried it but there's just something that doesn't hook me about it - can't put my finger on what it is, but it's something that FF seems to provide!

This is one of those things that is entirely personal to the individual - the fact that all of us in this thread are enlightened enough to not use IE6 or IE7 just because it comes pre-installed is surely the most positive thing - I ******* hate IE with a passion ...

Opera is easily the best browser.

Firefox has pretty much become the browser it was meant to replace.

*dons flame retardant suit*

Every time i've tried to use another browser, I always seem to keep going back to IE.

I don't use a lot of the extra features though, so IE7 does more than i'll ever need it to do.

I moved to Opera from FF about 18months ago, I love it. When IE7 came out I tried it out but soon found myself back with Opera.

Another avid Opera user here. I love it for its speed, features and custamisation. One thing you might want to try Richdog (If you haven't yet) Hold down the Right mouse button, then click the left one.. what that, it goes page back. Now hold down the Left one and click the right one, and your back forward again. So simple, yet genious! I keep fining myself trying to use that feature in almost ever program I use now. Another one is hold the Right mouse button and use the scroll wheel to cycle between tabs. :)

Or buy a mouse with forward & back buttons. :)

I've tried Opera before and gone back to Firefox. the main reason was the ability of add-ns to block advertising on sites I visit. Is ad blocking something that Opera can do?

OK, I am running Opera and just trying to work out how to do things. Apart for the ad block it seems very good. I'll report back when I have a bit more experience./

Another 7+ year Opera user here. I've been the using mouse gestures feature for so long that I inadvertantly try to use them in Windows and IE now

I can honestly say if I could access the Torrents options through the normal Options menu instead of whenever I add a Torrent I'd be happy. Also the Ad Blocking feature was hit or miss for me. I went to a page I use a lot in FF. Using the Adblock Plus and Filterset G in FF ALL the annoying bits on this page were blocked in FF. With Opera I was able to manually hide one, but I couldn't block the other even though it was an ad I didn't want.

One funky feature of Opera was whenever I wanted to paste a link in a post on OcUK but have it displayed as a word, eg: "here", I had to do this manually on OCUK in FF but with Opera it kind of automated the process a bit for me. I was astounded.:)

If I could sort these little problems out then I could really see me dropping Firefox for Opera.
