opposite of windows keygen

Have you tried the process described by lucifer-mnm?

I must say you have a rather combative attitude towards people who are trying to help you. I'm not going to bother suggesting what I had in mind because you will probably shout me down too!!

of which, MCE or PRO!!!! why is it not hard?
i didnt think i made my post too complicated, i know its not home, but media centre and pro are both based on pro, so therefore it could be either, i dont wanna do a windows repair with a pro upgrade if its MCE likewise i dont want to do a MCE upgrade if its pro.
sorry if it makes no sense but i thought it was pretty clear.

You don't get it do you? The sticker on the PC will tell you what edition the system come with.

You saying your system doesn't have a COA sticker?

yes i do get it, and i think you must obviously be the one that is not fully understanding it

its a second user license, the laptop was shipped with win98.
yes the key is on the bottom, but the part that says which version it is has faded.
try a windows repair with which version though, pro or mce as they are both different even though both based around the pro system, if i use the wrong version to repair with then chances are it will make things worse.

im pretty sure to most people that makes sense, its a second user license which has been transfered to the laptop which was shipped with windows 98, and the part that says which version it is has faded.
sorry if writing things in english is confusing you. but if you dont have anything constructive to post, then maybe this isnt the thread for you.

I asked you a question regards to the COA sticker.

and i had already posted that it had a COA sticker with license key which did not come with the laptop, it was purchased second hand and the windows version was faded so you cannot make out what it is. so asking if it has a sticker, after i posted saying it did is not really the most helpful thing.
the only thing i can think of is it must be a 64bit version, although i dont know if a 32bit disc would pick up that it had a 64bit version installed to offer to repair it.

surely they wouldn't have installed a x64 OS on a machine that was originally Win 98?

Have you tried my suggestion of booting into the OS with a live cd and examining the contents of the C:\ drive?

i have tried that yes, sorry. all i get is a 'the filesystem is corrupt please run checkdisk repair' style message when i try to open the drive :( have tried it externally too. i cant even just do a fresh install as i cant get any of the discs to accept the license key.

If it's faded contact Microsoft and tell them the sticker is faded so you can't re-install Windows. They may issue you with a new one and tell you what product it belongs too.

You might be stuck on having to buy a new OS with a new COA sticker.

but the key is perfectly readable  its just a case of working out which version it goes with.

as you can see, everything else on the sticker is perfect, its just the bit before edition that has faded.

oh, so that would explain it then. they assured us that it was an xp license they had purchased and had it upgraded.

Edit - That explains it :p

If it was upgraded then it the serial won't be on the COA sticker (Not the one you did a SS of). They would have had it emailed or over the phone therefor I guess it's lost.

A new licence will have to be purchased or Windows 98 SE back on. Good luck. :)

will give them a ring and explain that the last people they took it to have installed a pirate version of windows xp but charged them for a legit.

they had it upgraded by another computer shop, but being nieve and not having a clue about computers, they obviously were not aware they should have had a new license sticker and trusted the company. we see sooo many, but none have been clever enough to stick a new sticker on but wipe off the version before.
