is it worth me switching over to a dual core opteron 175 and ditching my 146?

current clocks on the 146 is 3ghz. and it seems to be my last chance now to get an opteron 175 before they are all gone.

how much difference would i see if i went to the opteron 175 and clocked it up?

An Opteron 146@ 3GHz is gonne be hard to beat, I doubt you will see 3GHz from the 175 so in games that access only one core you will be downgrading.

If you use any software that takes advantage of multi-core then you will see decent gains. I think Multi-Core would also be handy if you do some proper heavy multitasking or perhaps are gonna play with Vista.

i still use xp x64 and will do so well into next year. reason i don;t want to go to conroe is because i will have to buy a new mobo, BUT the main reason is that my 4 gigs of ram will then be laid to waste since i will need to buy 4 gigs of ddr2 and thats gonna really hamme the wallet.

can get opteron 175 for £160 all in brand new. guessing its now my last chance to either go dual core or stick with the single opteron i have.

i do know that getting a conroe 6300 the cheapest one will end up far quicker than the opty but the problem is again i don;t want to shell out for new ram, (or for a 150 quid mobo).

ahh what to do... if only conroe stuck to ddr ram it would have been so good.

I was in exactly the same position, i had a 3200venice and thought i'd better get an X2 now before stock ran out. So i was on the look out for an opty 165 but went for a 4600 in mm. Since doing so prices have risen again! Very happy with it tbh and glad i took the plunge. Saved me a fortune by keeping my mobo and ram.

yea good save there.

bit iffy though for me since im not sure an opteorn 175 will hit 3ghz.

someone mentioned somewhere that there is a conroe board that takes ddr ram. gonna look up on this, if its true then thats solved all my worries.

Asrock dual sata i believe, though there is a big performance hit due to chipset and ram limitation! I had considered the same move myself, though i would like to hear from those with that particular board to hopefully prove me wrong. :D

well thinking of going dual core but aint seen many with 3ghz out of dual core. the chances of getting 3ghz is VERY slim

the 89w 4400x2 cpus have been clocking pretty well..

can get a 165 for under 100 quid inc vat.

but since it has a low multi tis gonna need some serious fsb to get it up to speeds.

The 165 are possible the best dual opteron and they usually overclock better than the 175 (difficult to believe but I read that).

I was in the same dilema than you (and also with an AsRock Dual S) and finally bought a 170 and luckily overclock to 270x10 like my opteron 146. However matching your current 300x10 is going to be difficult for any AMD dual core.

To be honest you can try and if not happy sell it; I don't think you will loose any money as dual opterons are difficult to find now.

hmm, asrock to the rescue again, gonna check up some reviews on this.

Note that the with the Dual V-sata it has 2 dimms available for DDR and 2 for DDR2 so you would be stuck with only 2gig of ram.

I am unsure of any performance hit due to its chipset (via) but I can't imagine it would be that large when comparable componenets are used.

It has very restrictive overclocking abilities however (max 340fsb although in the real work this is much more like 300fsb).

I am running a celron 356 on mine without issues although I got it as very much a budget board and have no urge to go conroe just yet.

right iv gone with the opteron route, have a opteron 170 comming in early next week. hopefully i can hit 2.5ghz with it. its retail boxed and brand new so got no idea on how well it will do or what stepping it is. but the fun begins again when the overclocking starts :)

will sell my opteron 146 onwards, hopefully its still in demand. guess since it can hit such high clocks at low volts there should be some people out there wanting to use it in a media pc or those little shuttle machines.

will keep this thread updated on how the overclocking goes.

I think quite a lot of us picked up the Opteron 170's exactly one year ago, although people were paying £280-£350 for them at that point!

Even though I've gone Conroe I still think the Opteron's are a 'classic'. I have just today picked up a mint condition Opteron 146 from another forum member (Chex) so hoping to get that installed and overclocked in the next week or so, also got a few Venice's (3000+ 3200+ 3800+) gonna be running in an ASUS A8N-E, A8N-SLI and A8N-SLI Premium! :D

Just using the stock Opteron 170 coolers but I'm toying around with the idea of buying some nice heatsinks and maybe running these things passive.

Well at least there will be two of us on the forums playing around with Athlon64's :o

pretty much everyone is out of stock now on the opterons even the place i got it from is now sold out.

cost me £104 delivered, im hoping its a good stepping, will be happy if it can do 2.5ghz.

whats the stock opteron 170 cooler like? is it the same as the stock single core coolers?

bloody hell, that stock cooler has got heatpipes in it and the works, looks far more impressive than the stock 146 cooler.

ill still stick with my big typhoon though, but i guess when i sell my opteron 146 onwards i will package it with the stock 170 cooler so can offer the buyer a nice all round package.

thanks for that pic.
