is it worth me switching over to a dual core opteron 175 and ditching my 146?

current clocks on the 146 is 3ghz. and it seems to be my last chance now to get an opteron 175 before they are all gone.

how much difference would i see if i went to the opteron 175 and clocked it up?

i still use xp x64 and will do so well into next year. reason i don;t want to go to conroe is because i will have to buy a new mobo, BUT the main reason is that my 4 gigs of ram will then be laid to waste since i will need to buy 4 gigs of ddr2 and thats gonna really hamme the wallet.

can get opteron 175 for £160 all in brand new. guessing its now my last chance to either go dual core or stick with the single opteron i have.

i do know that getting a conroe 6300 the cheapest one will end up far quicker than the opty but the problem is again i don;t want to shell out for new ram, (or for a 150 quid mobo).

ahh what to do... if only conroe stuck to ddr ram it would have been so good.

yea good save there.

bit iffy though for me since im not sure an opteorn 175 will hit 3ghz.

someone mentioned somewhere that there is a conroe board that takes ddr ram. gonna look up on this, if its true then thats solved all my worries.

right iv gone with the opteron route, have a opteron 170 comming in early next week. hopefully i can hit 2.5ghz with it. its retail boxed and brand new so got no idea on how well it will do or what stepping it is. but the fun begins again when the overclocking starts :)

will sell my opteron 146 onwards, hopefully its still in demand. guess since it can hit such high clocks at low volts there should be some people out there wanting to use it in a media pc or those little shuttle machines.

will keep this thread updated on how the overclocking goes.

pretty much everyone is out of stock now on the opterons even the place i got it from is now sold out.

cost me £104 delivered, im hoping its a good stepping, will be happy if it can do 2.5ghz.

whats the stock opteron 170 cooler like? is it the same as the stock single core coolers?

bloody hell, that stock cooler has got heatpipes in it and the works, looks far more impressive than the stock 146 cooler.

ill still stick with my big typhoon though, but i guess when i sell my opteron 146 onwards i will package it with the stock 170 cooler so can offer the buyer a nice all round package.

thanks for that pic.

i got a Opty 175@3ghz

that would beat his single core 3ghz in multi tasking

what the!!! 3ghz at 1.35v? what stepping is that? hope i get a good clocker.

best thing is all i got to do is whop out the old cpu and slap in the new one. loads easier than having to change the board etc and reinstall the OS. another plus as to why i just went for a dual core opteron.

i'll post the 1.35vcore pic later cba now lol (it should be on XS forums i think)

stepping CCEBBE 0617EPMW

got new fan and stuff so load temps are under 59*C for both core

never heard of that stepping, from the manufacturing date it looks like it was one of the last ones the be made. i think all opterons ceased production in the 17/18th week of 2006.
not sure though

got the above link from amd website, when i have a dual core cpu installed whats the best thing to use?
is it the first item on that page :"AMD Dual-Core Optimizer "

or is it the one at the bottom: "AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16 "

or should i install both?

thanks for that info wayne. yea cool and quiet i don;t use since im overclocking. so no need for that.

i take it i should only install the dual core driver at the bottom of that list only if 2 cores do not show up in task manager?

will give google earth a try to see if it stutters or not.

im using xp x64 so things may be different.

excellent, seems even easier than i though.

why are the optimization drivers on amd site for ? do they not work properly or something?

odd how some people claim that the dual core optimizer actually hurts performance, can;t see why such a utility would exist if it had detrimental effects on performance. unless it been updated with a newer version now

right the cpu arrived today, interesting to say the least.

never heard of this stepping or code but here it is:

OSA170DAA6CD
LCB9E 0704TPMW

anyone heard of this code before? on the second line i presume the 0704 indicates it was made in the 7th week of 2004? didn't know they made dual cores in 2004? wonder how i got such an old one?
will test it out later today.

ok cpu is in now, it booted up into windows fine at stock speeds and windows found the extra core and did that acpi thing and asked me to reboot. rebooted but then windows froze when loading up.
tried a couple of times and still got boot freezes when going into windows.
then went into safe mode and installed the amd dual core driver, NOT the optimizer. now its booted into windows and gonna run some tests before i start to overclock.

but overclocking will deffo start today.

crikey, even though its running at 2ghz the windows response seems to be damn quick. opening things up and generally using windows seems to be quite nippy. feels smoother than my single core at 2.9ghz

right took a stab in the dark and set it to 2.8ghz at stock volts. running snm core 2 konked out after 2 mins. this is at stock volts.
this asrock board will not allow much vcore increase, 0.05 max over stock allowed so all i can feed the cpu will be 1.40v.
will increase vcore and test again now. gonna try 2.8ghz at 1.375v

right currently still in the testing phase, 2.8ghz @1.375v and snm has just passed the 30 minute mark.

the temp on the cores is slightly different, one core is at 50c the other core is at 47c.
seeing as its a native dual core cpu i doubt it has anything to do with heatspreadder contact. so not sure which core to believe but i guess i will listen to the hotter one.
the big typhoon has now got its work cut out for it. hehehe

it deffo failed 2.9ghz with 1.40v so i rekon i could come mid way and get around 2850 out of it at 1.40v possibly.

what would you guys class this cpu as? is it a stud? or is it a dud? :D
