Opteron 165 - 170 - 175 steppings? + anyone got any of these yet?

Its 1387408L50177. Are you hoping for a low batch number?

No, Ive already got one and am curious. Some if the batches are really good clockers. I think yours (408) is :)

Seems overclockers got a mixed lot.

mines a 170 CCB1E 0550 VPMW that I got elsewhere.

i think the batch number was 5** , not sure though as its running in my rig atm, not for long tho as Ive just sold it

Well had my 170 in for about 2 hours now. Doing 2.6Ghz with 1.4v - so just over stock volts, doing 2.8ghz with 1.5v, and with 1.55v I was seeing 3.0Ghz in windows. At 3Ghz tho temps were hitting 50 deg c and thats with water cooling. Although that was bios temp reading and my temp probe fixed on the side of the chip wasn't over 40 deg c.

I've not primed it or anything so not sure how stable yet, but I was playing toca rd2 for half hour no problem.

I'll see how the temps go and see how high I can take it tomorrow.

Nice clocks, that's encouraging. What motherboard are you on? :)

Well I'm typing this at 3.0Ghz using 1.6v, just keeping an eye on temps now. I was using 1.65v on the opty 146 at 3.0Ghz for the last 2 months without any problem so i'm not too bothered about having to use 1.6v on this 170.

I'm using the dfi nf4 ultra-d board with the FX60-Test bios for now. Ram is Geil One TCCD 1Gb running 1:1 at 300HTT 2.5,4,4,8.

I'm not convinved that a loat of volts will assist with this chip. Theres a couple of things I've noticed with this 170, compared to the 165 and single core Opterons:-

1. It throttles at boot up. I think it is heat related, but maybe a windows issue. Once I get past the Welcome to Windows bit, seems to take longer before all the apps in my systray have loaded. In theroy, each of the cores should launch different apps, and boot up should be quicker...

2. PWMIC get VERY hot when really pushing nthe machine with high clock speed and higher voltage. The hottest I'e ever seem that temp is 55 Degrees. and that after a heavy FEAR session which lasted 5 or 6 hours. Last night I was running PRIME on each core andafter 20 minutes I stopped them when the temp hit 77 DEGREES !!! CPU temp was 44 and Chipset was 49. The PWMIC is rated to 125 Degrees, but 77 was high enough for me. Its like the MOSFET isnt designed to handle such power.

Other people with 170's are reporting the same heat problems with the PWMIC temps on DFI NF4 boards.

My conclusions are that you will not hit 3ghz on air with later 170's. You will need water. You will also need passive cooling over the PWMIC area if you are going to use high clock speeds and volts. Its gonna put a lot of people off seeing temps hit 70+ degrees. Maybe I'll have to start looking for a different motherboard that handles Opterons better ! LOL

UPDATE on issue 1 about the throttling. I installed the dual core patch fix from MS and applied a throttling registry tweak. 3dmark06 benchmark increased by 300 points, with no other changes made. Also, SuperPI is quicker and apppraently more stable. Screenshot is @ 2.8ghz on 1,425v on air.

Have you got a link to this patch froms ms, and the reg tweak?

At 3Ghz my PWMIC was about 60Deg c but I've got a 80mm fan over the ram and that area so it's obviously helping a lot.

I'm quite impressed so far with this chip. At 2.6Ghz now 260 x 10, with 1.4v actual and the temps are cpu 38, pwmic 45 and chipset 50.
