Opteron Prime - Supermicro 4P folding mayham

This is to show you guys what is in the boxes. I will make better pictures and comment on them when I will actually use them.

4*Opteron 6383SEs - the current top of the line retail AMD Opterons
16*Hynix 1866 4 GB ram sticks
1 Seagate SSD 100GB
1 Supermicro G34 motherboard that supports 1866 Mhz memory - Supermicro technology at its finest.
1 4U Supermicro server rack. The only 19 inch rack that also has feet to stand upright.

More unboxing in a few days when other stuff comes in (and the battery of my camera is done charging xD )

Hold on to your pants, here is a LOAD of pictures.

Supermicro was kind enough to sponsor me with the motherboard and the chassis (including the 2 PSUs). I ordered the SSD and the RAM at them as well. It is quite easy when you choose a solution for your needs to just click a link that takes you to the tested hardware that will work guaranteed with the hardware you have chosen. It is what I did. I am kind of new to the server hardware world and especially with the RAM knowing exactly what brand and type 1866mhz ram will work with the motherboard and CPUs is very big pro.

Again thank you very much Supermicro for the hardware and the opportunity!

More updates incoming soon.

Ouch... 1M ppd is some serious wow. I'm looking to get up to 100k on my own rig before I join any groups. I want some more time to tweak my rig before I start folding with anyone else.

Don't worry about your output. Just join a friendly group like on here and fold with whatever you feel like. Perhaps even your MK 1 Gameboy :D

It is a great thing to discuss with others how to setup a system or knowing what hardware to buy etc.

Hopefully hukkel you will inspire others to join folding ( for ocuk of course :D: ) although I think you fold for overclock.net ?

Its its............beautiful *sheds tear

NERD HEAVEN :D

haha wait till you see the waterblocks mounted ;)

I hope the same thing. With my two builds I want to let people know about F@H who didn't know what it was yet.
I have a group of friends we fold with. Team is called The Secret Folding Team. Except for during foldathons and the yearly Chimp Challenge. Then I join the overclock.net team. I also have friends there and with a couple of 4P rigs we might someday have a chance against the other big teams.

Of course people on here I would always point to your team. But at the end of the day it's the cure that counts :)

I wouldnt mind getting into folding as I have a home server PC that is always on so may as well fold, it wouldnt be a folding beast, lol, but every little helps, any clues on how to do this? Is all folding GPU enabled now? (can AMD gfx cards be used?)

To be honest although I'd heard about Folding@Home before, (I'd seen it on my PS3) I wasn't really sure exactly what it was or what it was for, and I certainly didn't know there were people out there that built machines specifically to Fold.

This build's really opened my eye's and sparked my interest for Folding, so much so I've already been onto the Stanford website to read up about it and I'm going to download the software when I get in from work tonight. My PC's a bit of a dinosaur, but like 'Combat Squirrel' said, every little helps.

I'm really looking forward to seeing updates on this build, and seeing how it progresses. Excellent work :-)

Both AMD and Nvidia gfx cards are fine folders.
Both cpus and gpus are able to fold. But currently a decent GPU will give much more PPD than a decent CPU. For example a gtx680 will do about 90.000 PPD and a HD7970 does over 100.000.

In the distributed computing section of this forum there is a guide how to get yourself folding and lots of members with experience that are happy to help you out :)

A small update and unfolding of the project (CWUTIDIDTHAR)

The Supermicro chassis is amazing for being an aircooled server case. But I plan on doing something more so needed a bit more room. Since Caselabs doesn't make cases for this motherboard form (SWTX) I decided to go the scratch build route for the first time.

A good friend of me (Django) helped me out for weeks to draw up a pedestal and arch to fit around the Supermicro case. Dude I owe you BIG TIME!!! I will make it up to you.
I then sent it to a local metalshop for them to make and paint it. It will be made from 1,5mm thick steel. Perhaps by the shape you guys can already try and discover what goes where.

Very soon many more updates. At first a lot of unboxings, later on more building.

Enjoy

You know it's going to be a good build when you've heard of literally NONE of the hardware that's being used!

I'm looking forward to the day when I have the time/money/skill/experience/imagination to be able to even attempt to create a machine of this magnitude.

All the best!

What coolers do you use for them cpus ? They are huuugggeeee lol

You will find out soon ;)

This is definitely subscribed! good luck with the build :)

Thank you Hoodleader.

haha I understand what you're saying. This is server hardware. In a way it is similar to desktop hardware. But also in a way very different. And the naming is very off hahaha. You won't find this in the average overclckers.co.uk shopping cart ;)

How about a random picture. Just for fun :)

Is that block covering 2 processors as well as Mosfets?

You're nothing if not ambitious Hukkel... *sits back and waits for some Coldzero custom kit to be produced*

No random pictures, we want more build pictures :D!!

Edit: is that a huge cpu water block ? :D

Anticipation is half the fun ;) :P

Have a look again. On the top left there is one of the cpu sockets.
It is a waterblock for the chipset chips on the bottom part of the motherboard. It is being custom made and replaces the two actively cooled heatsinks there.

Watercooled server adventure awayyyyyyy

Exactly!

Thanks Chris!
Ricardo is indeed involved as well. He will make all 4 fangrills (which are very big) and a illuminated midpanel.

I don't know what the dude making this is on, but he has been working on it the day after he received the motherboard non-stop it seems.

Check what he just sent me. That is a single days work!!!! :jawdrop:

I am going to have a vinyl sticker made up that covers it with gfx on it (the Opteron Prime gfx). Then some leds under/in there and there we go.

I really want to have a version of the Opteron Prime banner on there. Would be great to have it lit up.

More pictures soon.

I want to thank Sander and Tom for this work. Tom you really worked your butt off.

They didn't sponsor me with this waterblock as in "gave it for free". But I received a nice discount and they are starting up such an amazing business I wanted to show their banner to you guys. They are really modders at heart and want to give everyone the opportunity to get anything created or do it yourself at their shop. Their business started 2 days ago. I have signed an NDA and seen some of the groundbreaking stuff they want to bring the community and it blew me away. If I am correct there should be an article about one of their products on Bit Tech soon(ish). Keep an eye on them. Good luck guys!

Small update on some parts I received. I was talking to my good friend Ben at Enermax about this build. Enermax however has put the Vegas Trio fans END OF LINE so no more available. Enermax didn't have any green led fans anymore in their stock. However he duck into the catacombs of previous demo parts, parts long forgotten and dragons roaming there. No one dares to go to this depths of the warehouse. But Ben grabbed his sword and got out 3 days later, barely alive BUT with all the remaining Enermax Green Twister led fans.
Even though they don't sell them anymore they wanted to give a hand to a big folding machine. Folding for a cure. Ben you're awesome!!!

I really want to thank Enermax and Ben in particular for helping this project out.

Had time to unpack them later only to find out..... 3 had been broken beyond repair :(
Must have happened during either packing or shipping.
And these fans are impossible to obtain anymore. Enermax litterally has 0 left.
I need 14 at least for all the visible fans. And now I have 13. Which is not enough.

Luckily last week I found a single one of these fans on Ebay.de. Litterally a single fan. He shipped to me and now I have the 14 I need. THANK GOODNESS.

The fans might look a bit flashy like this. But when behind a dustfilter with the leds on they look absolutely stunning.

Also bought some almost new Gentle Typhoons to use within the build. They will push the second rad and won't be visible.
