I hope you got the 2405 for the price before it changed Friday afternoon - they arent anywhere near as good a deal as they used to be ( no fault of OCUK i hasten to add)

I might well be geting a 170 from OCUK shortly - hope the steppings are good

Well no i bought mine like 2 days back, cost me £595 including VAT + P&P should be arriving later this week.

I was going to order one of these until I saw the price! £350! They were available yesterday for £282 inc vat form another UK etailor I know I ordered 3. and have had confirmation of delivery today. Why so expensive on here?

enjoy your dual core opterons guys. Should be able to get 2.6 ghz at least :D

Hows about 2.5ghz with 1.35V but i'm being held back by temps.

I'm already at 50C full whack and want to know how to drop them. I'm using a Thermaltake Silent Tower. Will watercooling really drop the CPU temp that much?

I have got the same stepping as he has. And just completed 8 hours of priming both cores at 2.5GHz, this is at 1.30Volt, CPU-Z informs its 1.280V. I have just booted up again at 2.6GHz at the same voltage. Will be popping to the office in a bit but hopefully when I come back (12 hours later) it should still be running.

Well I had a bit of a scare yesterday while trying for 3Ghz.... I got it working at 3Ghz the day I put it in but temps wer a little high so was at 2.6Ghz for the last 3 days. Anyway...

Restarted and went into bios, set to 300 x 10, from the 260 x 10 I was using at 1.4v. I put up to 1.6v on the cpu and left everything else the same. Saved and restarted and then it just powered off by itself. Turned it on again and it didn't post at all, and then what I can only describe as a gush of steam came out from the mosfet heatsink area! Flicked the psu power switch straight away and could smell electrical burning, I remember swearing quite a lot.

Anyway, checked the water system fully in case it had leaked and dripped on that part of the board, but it was all fine. Proceeded to clear the cmos and then let it all cool for half hour. Funally turned it on and it posted fine, so went into the bios and monitored the temps for half hour and all seems fine.

I've left it at stock speeds for now to test but so far windows is booting and everything seems fine. Strange part it that I have been using the same bios settings for about 8 weeks with a 146 opty at 3Ghz using 1.65v, so I wasn't pushing anything any further than normal. Obviously something just gave way but I've no idea what.

So the 3Ghz hunt continues with the 170.

Nick

Nick mate your feeding two 3ghz cores now! Your 146 was rated at about 47.5 Amps, these 170 are rated at nearly double that! around 80 Amps. thats why your mb's regulation circuitry is taking such a beating. dont forget if your watercooling you have pretty much zero cooling over the mosfets, thats why there getting so toasty, that and the current hungry cpu! cpu fans also do a good job of cooling the fets, which you dont have anymore

Just recieved my 170 today, not installed yet got to much work to do, bit worried about it thou as the box that the retail packaging shipped in was tiny and there was no bubble wrap or protection around the cpu, the box looked ok until i opened the retail box and found the green cardboard around the heatsink and cpu was broken and cracked, the box seems to have taken a beating, just hope its ok.

It makes so much more sense like that :) I have actually got a 80mm fan over the ram, but that still doesnt really help the mosfets.

I'm back up at 2.6Ghz now so getting FX60+ performance which is awsome. I'll see how it likes this for a while and go from there. I'm only using 1.4v to get 2.6Ghz so not stressing anything too much yet.

The new bigger AMD heatsink move around inside the boxes and the green cardboard falls to pieces !!
Did you buy yours from OCUK ??

BTW, got my 0550UPMW running at 2800 :)
Primed on both cores for 13.5 hrs, now lowered vcore to 1.375 in bios,
CPU-Z reads 1.36v and priming again.
Went to 2850 with 1.425v stable, with Big Typhoon and Panaflo fan.
Enhance 460w 'old' 20-pin psu !!

Nick, its really hard to believe but that extra 0.2 volts really increase the power consumption, your mb would have thermally cut off so your cpu will be fine, and the mosfets would be ok once they cooled down.

I was tempted by these, but as I'm gonna have an UBER upgrade next, I'll wait for the new socket to come out and avoid 939 all togeather!

the fastest skt am2 cpu will be the fx-62 with a lowly 2.67ghz clock speed and add to the fact ddr2 still sucks, I cant see what amd will have to offer with its new 940 pin socket.

I have exactly the same problem with my 170. 2.8ghz on 1.425v absoutley fine, 2.9ghz on 1.5v, PWMIC temps hit the roof. I bootled it when it hit mid 70's....and that was with an 80mm fan passivly cooling it. I hope this problem clears when my DFI Expert arrives next week ! :) Apparently the MOSFET is on the other side of the board, which will suit my case fine, there an exhaust fan there.

The junction temp rating on most mb power FETs is usually at least 150C and often 175C! MOSFET ic's take a lot of heat before they thermally shut down.
doesnt hurt to put a big 120mm fan over them though.

Hey Bito, Im the guy who emailed you on tuesday when our opteron retailer had by mistake, sent me the email between you and them regarding your box being knackered.
I didnt know you frequented this forum, small world !! :)

Glad your opteron is doing good, my '434' arrived yesterday with a very low batch number :D , going to put it throught its paces tonight.
