Optimising uTorrent

sorry didnt read every ones post but limit your upload to around 30-50Kb

and download to 0 (which means unlimited)

open port e.g 17200 (i use)

i get good speeds upto 1.4mb depending on the torrent and how many i have

I set my upload to 20k when downloading, depending on torrents i can hit over 600k's, im on UKFSN to, i limit it to 20k up as i find i can still browse perfectly fine to as well as get good download speeds. :)

When im only uploading i set it to 40k, but i have noticed if i forget to change it back to 20k when i set another download away it will struggle to get over 100k. :D

I was getting poor speeds but by trying out the linux torrent I've eliminated my connection or program settings being the issue. Probably just too many leechers...

OK have changed my settings now, very close to my limit this month so cant check till after 10. Settings are:

Uploads limited to 30kb/s
Global Max Connections: 500
Peers per Torrent: 100
Upload Slots per Torrent: 10

It's all about where your getting the torrents from (ie the users upload speed and quality of tracker)

I very rarely get decent speed from torrents from popular sites even if their are hundreds of seeds and lechers. However from AsianDVDClub I normally get 1 - 1.4MB/s even when their are only a handful of seeders and lechers.

Using uTorrent with all settings default except upload which I cap @ 10k (I find capping any lower than 10k reduces download in Utorrent significantly)

What I don't get is why I get so few of the seeds? If there's 2000+ how come I get 8?

Just update tracker a few times and you should connect to more, it will take a minute or 2 before you see any speed improvement.

P.S) Newsgroups >>> Torrents ;)

I've been playing around with the settings tonight and my download speed has gone from under 100k/sec to currently 515k/sec.

I have patched tcpip.sys as above and have the following settings in utorrent:

Global Max Upload: 15
Global Max Connections: 800
Max Number Connected Peers per Torrent: 200
Number of Upload slots per Torrent: 15

Made a huge difference for me, thanks all :)

IMO your upload is too low and Number of Upload slots per Torrent is way too high, especially for your global max upload.

For those that seem to have BitTorrent limited by their ISP be sure to turn encryption on. And those that aren't limited turn it on as well so people that are limited can download/seed to you as quick as possible :)

Just remembered, download the latest beta uTorrent and if you run the Speed Guide (Ctrl + G) and have maximum upload rate set to Auto (Preferences > Connection > Global Bandwith Limiting) then that should set you up perfectly!

Just tried this and my downloads dropped to under 100k/sec again :(

Very strange  In that case just go back to what works best for you :p

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that the tcpip.sys patch does nothing for the torrent program unless you change the half open connection limit in it as well.

For uTorrent it's in the Advanced menu (the one with all the complicated looking options) under the name net.max_halfopen. Change it so that you have enough room for other programs to have half open connections too (for example i've patched to have 100 half open connections, and have that value set to 60) :)

After putting back the settings to how they were before i'm still getting the same speeds lol. Must just be some crappy torrents this time. I've gone down the route of using the settings from the speed guide. I think i did xx/384 then just rounded everything up to round numbers. Will see how it goes. Problem is even from minute to minute you might be downloading from different sources so there is no immediate way to see if things have improved. I'll wait till my net batch of torrents and see then.

EDIT

LOL after all that the speeds jumped to over 200 with the new recommended settings for the first time all night. Settings now are:

Upload:35
Global Max: 250
Peers per Torrent: 100
Upload per Torrent: 5

Similar to my config.

Upload : 70
Global Max : 200
Peers per Torrent 90
Upload per Torrent : 2
Max Torrents : 3

I would rather share high upload with relatively few people than a low upload speed with a lot of people, so I put the number of upload slots per torrent capped at 2.

I cannot understand why people cap their upload speed at 10kbps and then have a high number upload slots per torrent... Who wants a download connection crawling along at 512 bytes per second? If you really have to have 10kbp limit, then please set your number of upload slots to 1.

Current speeds from about 5 mins ago:

Current Settings:

Upload:45
Global Max: 250
Peers per Torrent: 100
Upload per Torrent: 5

Quite pleased with that so will stop tinkering.

Try forcing encryption in the options > Bittorrent > protocol encryption > set it to forced or enabled.

Might help out for the people being traffic shaped.

Encryption is already on. As far as i know shaping doesnt work like that though, common ports get priority and unknown high ones will get the same bandwidth whether ecnrypted or not, whatever is left over.
