Optimum hard drive setup?

How do you mean by best?

What about

8 x 15k 300GB Hitachi SAS drives. Say £400 each? A decent adaptec card to go with? circa £600 maybe

That's a shade under £4k, plus you'd need a decent PSU to power it all.

ahhhh no sorry i menat such as

HD 1: Os
Hd 2: Page file
Hd 3: Games

i'm just curious as to what layout i should create for my next install of Vista ( i do a fresh install aevery 6monthish ). I was considering getting a raptor to put the OS on for some faster load times etc.

I wasn't trying to be clever ;)

I've got a 74GB raptor which is great, much faster boot times in games and the OS is a lot more responsive than a normal 7200rpm HDD

Thoretically what you're thinking of doing is a good idea, just make sure you have plenty of room for vista, it likes to eat up disk space quickly!

Having an entirely seperate drive for the page file might be a little excessive though!

I find having the page file on a seperate drive to OS and games makes a lot of difference, specifically the games.

The idea of putting the page file on a different drive/partition is to reduce seek times, ideally it would be on the edge (begining for best performance) of the disk

Personally i like to segregate my partitions for backup purposes, so
c: windows (50Gb)
d: apps (200Gb)
s: storage (rest)
t: temp (page file. temp files) (20Gb) <- i redirect all temp files here to keep the c:\ free which is why it is so big

I dont bother backing up the apps or temp drive at all resulting in significantly smaller backups

Regardless of what ram you have then windows XP or Vista still needs a page file.

whilst it's a bad idea to disable the page file, if you have plenty of ram, the very slight performance increase of having it on a separate drive just isn't worth the hassle.

imo, velociraptors are overpriced and over-rated.. For the same price, I have 2x1TB F1's in raid0.. much, *much* faster when it comes to sustained reads/writes, much faster burst speeds, quieter, colder, and ~seven times the storage space. You'd be paying massively for the improved seek times.

my 2c :)
