which of the opteron cpus would be better
an opty 180 denmark core or an opty 185 venus core

i currently have a 939 setup and dont have the cash avialble for full upgrade to either the am2 or am2+ system yet

ive tried to overclock my current x2 4400+ (toledo) cpu without much success best i can get is an extra 200mhz

currently using a foxconn NF4SK8AA-8EKRS
2 gig mushkin xp4000 redline ram (running at 533mhz) due to setting on mobo allowing 250mhz on ram without clocking the cpu up

i did knock the mem timmings down when trying to overclock current cpu but could not get past 220mhz

from what ive read the optys overclock extreamly well and would allow me to get some of the performance im looking for untill i can afford a proper upgrade.

Venus is single core only aka Opteron San Diego, opty 144, 146, 148 etc. used that core.
Denmark is a dual core aka Opteron Toledo, found on opty 165, 170, 175, 180, 185 etc....

I ran an opty 170 Toledo on my old DFI board at 3GHz for a good year.
It was quite common for the cheaper dual cores to overclock better, this was because the more expensive processors tended to sit around for longer at Intel due to less demand, thus didn’t see the later and more matured cores that overclocked significantly better.

Id say go for a good stepping 170, 175 or 180

Got these details from ********** which shows the opteron 185 to be a venus core also being dual core this is why i asked or have they got there info incorrect

These are known steppings that are capable of running 3GHz and are found on the 165 right up to the 185 dual core.
These steppings are way more common on the 165 and 170 dual cores, so there is actually more chance of finding a good clocking 165 than there is a 185

LCB9E 0742CPMW is this stepping code any good
seems to show on most 175,180, and 185,s ive seen on ebay

should also mention ive got another 1 gig of mushkin xp4000 redlines
and a zalman cnps 9500nt HSF arriving soon as well

i have got a lcb9e 06/52 wpmw opty 180 that does 3ghz on stock volts
the general feeling about the lcb9e's was that they were good clockers on stock volts but once near there limit increasing there volts made little difference

I would like when overclocking to get the FSB around the 250Mhz mark that way i can get my mem running at its optimum 500Mhz
I konw the mem runs at this as it is already doing so without having to overclock the FSB just using the Mem timmings
If i can overclock the Cpu to around the 3 Ghz mark and have the cpu and mem running 1:1 with the mem at the full 500Mhz then i'll be quite happy

as with buying any new cpu there are no guarantees you are going to get a good one , but most off the later optys seem to have done quite well .
the only other option is to buy a known good clocker second hand , unfortunately you have not got the required post count to get onto the members market here , but there is that well known auction site :)

What fsb is your motherboard good for? Its just that if you were to get a 165 then you need to be hitting over 300MHz fsb to get 2.9GHz due to 9x multy.

How much is your budget?

Hey all,

Very interested in this thread I have seen some Opty 175's for sale. Currently running a Opteron [email protected] FSB 275MHz and some Corsair TwinX running with a FSB 1:1. Would there be any improvement moving to a 175 ?

Cheers

Loads :). I actually felt the burn right away as soon as I booted up with a single core CPU I was overclocking and my X2 3800 @ 2.8Ghz went for a rest. I could never move back to single core as the extra CPU is so much better.

I went from an opty 146 at 3GHz to a 170 also at 3GHz and I didnt notice much difference at all. this was a while back and it was rare to find multi threaded apps especially games. Today is a different story so a jump from single to dual would make a real difference and being able to up the clocks would also add an extra boost :)

So basically if your on a 144 a good move would be to grab a second hand dual core opteron. Very cheap upgrade before you do a full system rebuild

Edit: ohh, your running a lanparty nf4 ultra d, you really should grab a cheap 170-175 opteron! that old board is still my most favourite mb ever, I still have it running in an old machine 24/7.

My mobo has FSB upto 300mhz in 1 mhz increments
however i have found that with the extra 1 gig mem installed my system will not boot with it running at 500Mhz anymore the max i can set memory spd to seems to be 233Mhz
seems to be an issue ive found before when using 512Mb modules previously crucial ballistix pc4000 modules
so looks like i need to find another set of 1 gig modules to get my 500mhz mem timings

Cheers Hesky :)

Yes I do like my DFI board very much, got it from the clearance section last year for a very good price. Only problem it was missing the audio module so a quick email to DFI and they sent me one for free by next day delivery from Holland ! Now thats what I call customer service.

Only reason I'm not running any quicker than 2.4Ghz is cause I am still on the stock HSF and was considering going for a Tuniq Tower or Thermalright Ultra.

Thats seems to be the case with all good AMD chips...

Clock well....dumm deeee dummm.....ooohhhh its a brick wall at around 3-3.2Ghz, I remember changing an Akasa cooler that cost a fiver for a top end thermalright and only got an extra 40mhz.

Well you'll need a better cooler for a dual core that’s for sure, so if you get the cooler now, have a bit of fun with the 144 and then you’re ready to move to dual core.

If you get the Tuniq Tower it will also fit intel 775 boards as well as your 939 board, don’t think the Thermalright is as flexible like that.
Actually do the Thermalright ultra fit 939?
