opty 180 or opty 185

Hey,

Well after looking for a Opteron dual-core for a maximum of £50, I gave up, some of them appear to be going for £100+ on a well known auction site. Have eaten some humble pie and got a good deal on a Asus P5N-E M/B with an E6300 processor, 2Gb RAM and a Arctic Cooler Freezer 7. Hopefully that will keep me busy for awhile and should be a fair bit quicker than my current system. Thanks for the advice guys and will let you know how I get on with the E6300 in the overclocking forum.

Cheers

Dave K.

Dave, you did exactly the right thing. Many people clutch onto old sockets and pay a silly premium for dated cpu's. If you struggle to get a good deal call it a day and upgrade your mb and cpu.

I used to run a P5N-E with my old E6600 and it ran for over a year at 3.6GHz. Friend now has it running an e2160 at 3.2GHz :)
An E6300 has a fairly low multi but still 400*7 (2.8GHz) should be easily obtainable. Even at that speed it will walk all over an opteron dual at 3GHz.

Quite a few people are running 450+ fsb with that cpu and board, but it can be quite a temperamental board if you don’t rub it the right way so to speak, even though on 1st impressions it seem simple when compared to a lanparty.

Drop me an email if you want any help, I know the bios and it ways like the back of my hand!

sir-les-mp, If you can score an Opteron dual core that can do at least 2.8GHz on your board for a decent price then it’s worth looking into.
A quick look on a well known auction house shows that 180's and 185's are commanding a ridicules price at the moment

If you know you will get the most out of a quad core then the Phenom may be worth looking into, even then Id recommend an Intel quad over an AMD quad.

Why don’t you look at a core 2 duo setup that will run an easy 3GHz?

Ive always used AMD and im quite happy with the peformance i normally get with them
to be honest i dont really have use for a quad core just yet most of time is used in gaming with some dvd encoding from time to time.
Im basically looking for just a quick upgrade at present till i can afford a complete system rebuild hopefully 6 - 9 months time
then possibly look into an intel setup for the first time since the orignal pentium cpu

dual core cpu for games is almost a nescsity these days it even helps speed up some of the older single threaded games as well
Most ot the extreamly popular games had patches released that made use of the new dual core cpu's when they first came out
If you are a gamer i would recommend upgrading to a dual core CPU whether it be another AMD CPu or you go for what appears to be the faster C2Duo's

You have answered your own question, simply no point going Phenom then :)

Thanx i just need another opinion to make sure i was making the correct desicion
Means my brain aint quite died and gone too heven then

sir-les-mp,

I have two things to say. . .

One . . . . . . your signature is ridiculous! :o

Two . . . . . . You really need to read the Forum Rules regarding talk of competitors!

clarify yourself wayne
as far as ny sig is concerend it shows what i currently have and the fact with my current cpu it's not overclockable however i have managed to overclock my mem which i have seen by a few members of this forumn.( are you suggestiung i should lie )

and as far as compitetors as concerned i ask a legitimate question and supportted it with evidence wether a denmark core opteron was bettere than a venus core opteron at this piont i was unaware the venus core was a single core cpu however i have had further searches wich support the answer which i was given that the venus core opteron is only a single core cpu and not dual core as i was lead to belive by the site i mentioned.
if it makes you happy i can remove the name where the info was found however i was not advertising thier ware'z, i only tried to link to information i had found in regards to a question i had asked the members of this forumn

however if you can advise me of how my sig should appear i will take your information onboard and digeset it as i have others within this forumn
