Organ Donation...

Little bump, I think a thread like this is worthy of one.

Got a letter and my donor card in the mail today, will be keeping it in my wallet :)

Go on people, sign up! https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ukt/RegistrationForm.do

Cheers dude, I didn't bump this before as I thought people wern't interested.

Hey mods, how about making this a sticky, even if one person joins up then it's worth it.

Transplant organs dont really last that long, the drugs used kill other organs. .

Well I would personally say that a good chance of at least 20 years for a kidney just using today's medication like Tacrolimus and MMF is pretty good. And they do not kill other organs you are just making that up.

I really wish the Uk adopted the approach other EU countries have;

You are automatically opted in, rather than out. As I'm pretty sure at least 95% of peeps would happily give up their organs after death to help another, but just never get round to registering.

So do I, if they just took my organs I wouldn't care as i'll be dead but signing up to be a donar i'm reminded every day and it's not the sort of thing I want to think about.

There are big problems with this system. Working in an area where we do a great number of transplants this is something that we frequently discuss but even though it may directly benefit patients it is something that we in the main can not condone. Transplantation is sold as this wonder-cure and end goal for patients and the fact remains whilst it can be great for some it can also end up being a total disaster for others. The state of NHS IT systems in this country means that if such a system was implemented there would be false harvests ... and I for one would not like to tell a patients family that they had been cut up against their wishes because there was a computer error.

my cusin who died yesterday was a massive beleiver of donating his organs but for 1 reason or another it didnt happen i know he would have wanted toot ho he was registerd and carried the propper card not just when you sign for your driving licence

If you sign the list, and don't carry the card, what's the deal? Do they check the list after I die and then harvest the organs, or does this waste my organs?

Because if I'm lying on a table, getting all resuscitated, I don't want any of the medical staff there knowing I'm a donor.

Card is pretty useless - or at least that's what it said in the letter that accompanied it. It's just for your use/to make you feel good. The database is the only thing that's used to check whether you're registered or not.

Unfortunately pretty much the same as if you don't sign up. get permission from next of kin. Who can refuse to let them even if you are signed up :(.

Which is why it's important to discuss this with your next of kin and make sure they understand your decision.

Considering im on the waiting list for a double lung transplant due to a serious chronic lung condition, I would really appreciate any/all of you to sign up for a donor card, you could save my life as every day I am deteriorating and my prognosis is less than 2 years.

Thank you :) (yes very serious)

and it would be great if this were a sticky given the amount of people on this forum :)

I've told all of my family they can take whatever they want out of me if the worst happens. I won't need it, and would gladly give it to someone else who would.

Sorry to hear that mate, hope you get well. Lets keep this thread on the first page.

signed up via web a week or so ago courtesy of their new ad campign. Haven't let family know yet, though, thanks for reminding me.

If you're happy to give your organs to someone who quite possibly doesn't deserve it, then good on you.

As for me, for now, I'll choose to keep them.

me to theres always a good possibility they would be used to science purposes anyway and not actually used to save a life.

ill hang on to mine thanks

Rubbish, they can only use it for research if next of kin gives them specific consent.
37) Will organs or tissue that are removed for transplant be used for research purposes?

Organs and tissue that cannot be used for transplant will only be used for medical or scientific research purposes if specific permission has been obtained from your family.

And how many good people are dying thanks to people thinking like you. You have no need for organs once you are dead.

tbh, I think it should be an 'opt out' service

ie, you're in, unless you've gone to the trouble of singing up to not donate organs

Are you joking? What a gross of invasion of privacy and respect for bodies.

Yes donation in theory is a lovely thing, but it has to be choice, not just through default.

I personally don't trust the whole donation lark. Family is different though.
