Organ Donations

Hi there

Thought I'd create this thread in relation to a conversation my OH and I had the other night.

Bit of background, She works as an ODP (Operating Department Practioner) specialising in neurosurgery and as part of her training earlier this week done a course on the Organ donation / replacement surgical teams - this was quite an in depth course involving speaking to surgical team members, organ recipients and the mother of a 12 year old girl who decided (after a brain aneurysm) that she wanted to become an organ donor! There's no need for me to go into too much detail re the conversation (suffice to say I was shocked) but I was also hit with a question I'd never thought of before. I'd always been in the frame of mind that no way would I ever be an organ donor, if I was dead I'd be buried/cremated in whole as I was born, however. . . . . . . .

Reverse the role, if for whatever dreadful reason you required a heart, kidney, etc etc would you be willing to turn it down having previously been in the same mindset as myself?

Slightly off topic but I'm a regular blood donor and have always thought "you never know when you may need an emergency blood donation yourself" and this is pretty much along the same line. Our conversation has certainly opened my eyes and now I am considering becoming an organ donor. I guess the question I'm asking what frame of mind are you guys (the collective OcUK forumites) in? And what decision would you choose?

I'm an organ donor, although i'm considering un-subscribing as so far I've yet to meet anyone I think is worthy of my organs once I don't need them.

I'd give whatever I have left. If I could help someone who needs it then I don't care, I'll be dead.

Although my liver and lungs may be no good!

And stomach, heart, brain. In fact I am useless:(

yup

everything bar the eyes thats just personal choice as it freaks me out the thought of it

I'd donate my organs. I won't need them once I'm dead.

The doctors can donate what they like and keep the rest for research/educational purposes. If, for whatever reason, they are unable to use my body then I'd like to be cremated and my ashes scattered (preferably in a river, but whatever's most convenient).

I have been an orgran donor since my early teens. I will require kidneys in the future to live. I put down everything except corneas and my bowel as they are not suitable really need to update that to include my kidneys :(

Anything else they are welcome to.

I don't understand why everybody isn't an organ donor.

You see - that is exactly the opposite mindset from how I was!

I was under the opinion that no way would I ever donate, it's a brutal application removing said organs but when you think about it you're dead! So why not? You're not going to feel it!

+1

it should be made a legal requirement that if you want to be able to have an organ transplant, you yourself must be an organ donor, therefore all the people who aren't organ donors cannot get transplants.

if giving blood was a lot easier i would do it, there should be more portable clinics set up in city centre's etc.

People shouldn't be so precious, chop me to pieces once I'm gone who cares.

Should have an opt-out rather than an opt-in system.

I have been registered as a donor since I was about 11 / 12. If I dont need them I would rather give someone else the chance to live.

I have just turned 16 and just got the slip through the post. It is currently sitting on my desk half filled in :D

I think about it this way, if I was in need of an organ and I was offered one I wouldn't think twice about taking it (as long as the donor is dead and it wouldn't affect their lives). And also, when I am dead, I won't need any part of me. If I am cremated, then a perfectly good organ (or set of organs) are wasted. If I am burred, all my perfectly good organs are going to do is sit in a box (again being wasted). If I don't need them then surely giving them to someone else is better than wasting them?

All of the above is assuming my organs are healthy lol :)

Cheers for the input Dave :)

Good call Sonny the possibility that anyone could potentially require any organ at any time in the future would certainly lower the waiting lists of organ recipients if your idea was implemented!

As for giving blood just click here and put in your post code. It's not hard, it's not sore, takes roughly half an hour - gives you a free cup of tea and could save a life :)

Seriously though, why would anybody be so selfish that you wouldn't give your organs to somebody that desperately needs them? Even though you have no need for them?

Baffles me how the human race can be like that.

I give blood for the awards rather than anything else. I like the cards, was onto bronze by the time i was 19, going to be a while yet for silver but i do it as often as i'm allowed.

Well as I've stated before from my mindset of "I was born this way - and I'll die and be buried/cremated this way" to my current mindset of considering to become a donor arose from my conversation with my OH.

I'd genuinely never thought of it any other way, call me selfish if you like? but I'm sure there's many others that have (and still do) think the same way!

Who is the person, why do they deserve to live? George Best got a liver and then wrecked it within a very short space of time.

I'm registered and carry the card, but it seriously concerns me sometimes what sort of scumbag might get my organs if i were to die.

thats for england and wales only.

its not just the time it takes, it what it also does to your body, im a bodybuilder and any time my body spends re-generating blood could have been time taken re-generating muscle.

i think bodybuilding combined with giving blood i would be severely taxing my cns and would be ill constantly.
