Origin. Is the program really that evil?

Troll much?

The download/install process in Origin is *** backwards for a start compared to Steam.

Really? Every game I have on there I have added the game key - which is exactly the same process as steam. The game has popped up in my library saying ready to download. I click that button. It maxes out my connection to download xGB over xHours, and when downloaded it installs. Once installed, I click play and voi-la, the game launches.

How on earth is that any different or worse than Steam?

I've got other games on Origin which I've never had a problem with.

I've already installed and played BF3 on Monday. I hadn't even closed down Origin and when I looked on Tuesday BF3 said 'ready to install'. I had the same problem with both the Alpha and the Beta.

Been looking for a solution online and found people with the same problem but nothing seems to fix it.

The download/install should be one of the same and automated, just like Steam.

In this day and age, that is just lazy programming by E.A as they obviously cannot be bothered to repackage their installers, they just want to tag on a modded .exe

Is it completely automated on steam though? I downloaded and installed GTA4 last night, and after sitting through the download, it finished. Went to launch the game and it actually launched installing other components.

Horses for courses. I personally don't have a problem with either. They manage games, they launch games, job done.

stupid Q but is bf3 on it now as it just says pre order still :-s

A lot of people had it on preorder through Origin and managed to unlock the game by using a Korean VPN or proxy (which I used) to unlock the game files, as it was released at midnight on the 25th over there.

For all those who duon't know you can change your name. Ea now have a web page for doing so. I did it on Monday. As long as the name is not already taken you can change it very easily.

I've not even tried BF3 yet as BF2, 2142, and MoH all left a very bad taste and no belief that EA will make anything half decent.

As for Origin, well given EA's track record again, i'm not exactly falling over myself to try it. It took me a while to accept Steam (in which time it had improved drastically) but I still don't agree with them forcing it on people who install HL2 so I don't agree with EA forcing Origin on people either.

Time will tell, really. But I doubt i'll be rushing out to get BF3 at release. Don't get me wrong, I won't be rushing out for MW3 either.

Other than a directx/runtime install it could have been GFWL which GTA IV uses.

The point is, the install process on Origin is *** backwards.

I assume origin supports cloud game saves?

I'm sure BF3 will be good, like Bad Company 2 was - annoyingly.

On the other hand, I have no faith what so ever in EA not to completely and utterly rip the arse out of each of it's customers in pursuit of a single dollar. I don't trust them to 'manage' anything on my behalf, let alone pay for the privilege.
It's less about Origin and more about the beast behind it.

Well i just tried to pre-order BF3 and Origin wouldnt go through with it

It just kept saying i had 3 items in the Check out and it would just reload the checkout everytime i hit continue.

You would think they would want my money more then that :p

Left Need for speed carbon to down load last night and it came up error when it tried to install so i told it to keep install files and download again, same problem so i installed manually.

Anyone know how to just have the friends list showing and without the Mygames/Store which takes up huge amounts of screen space.

older games in origin i belive need like a tool to varify so you can have problems with them and may have download again :(

overall not too bad but its pretty new not as god as steam yet but not as nbad as all the pc rager make out. even on day one it cant be as bad as gfwl :p

EA didn't make Origin themselves, it is made and supported by a third party called Digital River.

Just FYI...

The program is absolutely fine - it's just a bit annoying that i have to have a second digital content provider on my PC now rather than just having the ease of everything being organised nicely in steam

this..

I'm using Origin now for BF3, SWTOR & ME3. Apart from that what else am I going to buy from the store there is nothing worth having.

Maybe E.A. will start releasing some indie games on Origin,.

The EULA was criminally bad (read - spyware bad), it got re-worded and it is still horrendous. Yes, I have read. Data collection is NOT anonymous as it is linked to your IP. EA can use this to target advertisement DIRECTLY.

Steam does anonymous data collection and is Opt-In. Very very different.

it's way easier and faster now. You can just open the battlelog site in your browser (bookmark it) and instantly play. You can even browse the web while the map loads.

i do that in bfbc...its called alt tab. windows preview screen shows me at a hover over the task manager if the game has started or not.

i do those when Que to join and waiting but i also hear my gfx card cooler ramp up when it does begin to load me into a server.

Steam give you free stuff.
The only thing EA have given me is herpes!*

*May not be true.
