Origin. Is the program really that evil?

Origin Should be called F-origin, as in F-origin through all your files, from a quick search on google there are reports about it containing a ring0 rootkit. Would not surprise me in the slightest.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven of a lack of respect for our personal privacy on the part of big publishing. How many more of these hideous DRM mutations will we need to install on our rigs just to play in the coming years.

Can't wait to see what Ubishifti come up with, Game box will contain electronic neck tagging, must connect neck tag to router before PC will boot due to rootkit installed by game.

Yes it's Evil, along with anything else that tries to take away what few rights we all have left. Our right to personal privacy is huge too, profiling people and putting groups of people in boxes just sucks.

It's almost like the identity card lobbyists that got defeated a few years back have regrouped and this is what they have come up with.

Will be avoiding this purely on principle.

I had seriously considered purchasing BF3, despite my utter lack of FPS skillz, but Origin is too high a price to pay. This does mean I may miss out on ME 3, Diablo 3 and SWTOR, but what can you do!?

If EA stop snooping around my PC and telling every Tom, Dick and Harry what they find on there, then I might play ball. Using it as it stands is just giving out the wrong message and it surprises me that so many are untroubled by it. Then again, perhaps today's teenagers and early twenty somethings are more accepting of this level of intrusion? It doesn't sit well with me though.

Origin keys are sold by over 100 electronic retailers including GreenManGaming

don't like their prices ? buy the Origin Key from somebody else.

I don't like how you can't add any older EA titles to it. For example, I have the boxed version of Crysis (amongst other EA titles) sitting on my shelf, a game that is available for purchase via Origin, yet for some reason I can't add my copy to Origin.

It's fine. It works, doesn't use much resources and it doesn't bother me. It's not steam but it's OK and understandable why a company like EA went that way. I just hope I don't need to install numerous distribution platforms to play my games. That would start getting lame very quickly.

Yeah they definitely need to sort that.

Its BETA software still

The ability to do that will no doubt come in time.

Even goggle stores all your searches, its pretty standard to sign away your privacy on the internet these days.

Firefox has an addon available called 'track me not', which basically submits random search requests from your browser to all the search giants, over time they just end up with reams of useless jibberish.

Some other Privacy friendly addons include, Flashblock, Better privacy(for Supercookies) and adblock plus(just use the easylist subscription)

given the choice i usually opt out of data collection, choice in the matter is getting rare though.

If information is the new currency then how about buying my info from me.

EA...let you add old titles to Origin....for free?

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAA

No chance. :p

If they are going to compete with Steam they are going to have to match them on features like this.

Nobody is going to pay for a game twice just so its in Origin. For games they already own they'll just leave it installed as it is.

EA already let you buy your origin keys from over 100 3rd party retailers who charge considerably less than Origin do for example ....

Regardless of privacy issues. Its just a horrible piece of junk. It's slow, looks awful, crashes, and generally feels like it was developed to just annoy the hell out of me.

I don't see Origin as "evil" as such, granted the EULA leaves a bit to be desired but thats another story, its not for me even about Origin specifically - tho previous useage of the EA download client gives me the impression its probably going to be poorly implemented and problematic compared to steam.

What I don't want is a situation where every publisher thinks they need to have their own client not only for downloading but inevitably has to be running when your playing games that are installed through it. I don't want a dozen different clients installed on my PC of varying levels of quality, having to remember which game was installed with which, the incompatibilities that it can result in especially when poorly written clients use things like filesystem hooks for DRM, etc. or just leaving them all going all the time for convenience and the impact resource and problem wise on the PC, slower boot times, etc. etc.

Also I don't need to maintain yet another friends list :S

For me this means I no longer buy games that aren't on Steam (and aren't standalone - tho I'm more likely to buy something if its on Steam) it does mean I'm missing out on BF3 which annoys me a bit but I'm not gonna go down that path. Steam happens to have been there first, is generally convenient rather than getting in the way (which is not the case for many clients i.e. GFWL) and on the whole does an OK job.
