Origin. Is the program really that evil?

DRM-ridden EA games when browsing through Steam

Isn't steam the DRM?

The majority of EA titles are garbage but missing out on titles like BF3 because you don't wanna install a second content platform is just silly.

Surely people understand my point

I understand your point but I just think you've gotta draw the line somewhere. I want to play BF3 more than the EULA bothers me. EA has me by the balls and I like it.

Yup you have to draw the line somewhere and I don't want a scenario where I need to have clients for Games for Windows Live, Origin, Steam plus clients from ubisoft, bioware, bethseda/zenimax, activision, atari, sony, capcom, eidos, lucasarts and so on, most of which will want to run at startup from windows, install some kinda almost rootkit style software for DRM which invariably will clash with something else somewhere and need to be running when I run the games for that publisher. Not to mention the hassle of maintaining community stuff like friendslists for each, remember what I need reinstalled/backed up, etc.

It might not look like a big problem at this stage, but if each developer decides they need their own content platform its gonna be no fun at all and using Origin is just encouraging it.

+1
I will buy it from Origin but im in no hurry unless the clan twist my arm and i would never pre order from there.

I have no interest in games like BF3.

Steam is fine because I just had to sign up to one thing, and then Steam takes care of the rest, no hassle. Except for when you're buying a game made by EA or Ubisoft who force extra crap onto you in-game.

I decided to stop buying EA games after playing DA:O, and being forced to sign up to their social network. I had a lot of trouble getting the DLCs working, and at one point I realised "This is stupid, I just want to play a game, but companies like this are making me jump through hoops. I shouldn't have to put up with this."

So now I don't put up with it. I'm sure they won't miss my money, but likewise I won't miss being treated like scum just because I bought a game.

whereas steam on the other hand will:

“store information on a user’s hard drive that is used in conjunction with online play of Valve products. This includes a unique authorization key or CD-Key that is either entered by the user or downloaded automatically during product registration. This authorization key is used to identify a user as valid and allow access to Valve’s products. Information regarding Steam billing, your Steam account, your Internet connection and the Valve software installed on your computer are uploaded to the server in connection with your use of Steam and Valve software.”

But Steam is amazing and totally not like origin mmmmmkay ?

I personally don't care what is sent yo origin, but some points need to be cleared.

Its not about what is similar, because there is always going to similarities, even OCUK have some with personal details and authentication kept at there end and on your PC with cookies.

The deference is what is needed, essential information for security, functionality and convenience and not just out and out snooping.

I really don't see a problem with that, All it says is that your cd key will be used to identify you to make sure you are a valid online user,

Steam is not forcing me to agree that it can scan my computer and sell the information it finds, I know the option is there on steam as part of the steam hardware survey but it isn't done for profit and is completely optional

Steam doesn't sell every game though. You can't blame a big company like EA wanting their own distribution platform and not have to pay valve a percentage of every sale. Oh well, your loss I guess.

I agree evilgrin, I'm stuck with Sniffy88 :/

Yep, I'm EvilGrin80, even though I have EvilGrin as Battlefield Persona. I've looked up EvilGrin on origin, and no one has it, no one has my alternative personas either. Reason I know that it's the personas that "reserve" your origin ID is that every single one of my 12 personas are apparently not available, some of them are so completely random it's not possible anyone would have used it.

Blah. Crappy system.

How do you search for other peoples Origin IDs ?

With all the draconian DRM thats forced down PC gamers throats and all the hoops we have to jump though anyone would think they dont want us buying games on PC.
Its almost like they only want us buying console games eh

It wasn't that bad during the beta just about to install BF3 now.

It will be very annoying if everyone decides they want their own platform as I don't want nor need that many clients. Steam got there first and its nice to have all your friends and community related activites in one place its a lot easier to manage.

What is funny is people complaining that they did it for BF3 "their flagship game of the year".
I am pretty sure Steam was released when CS was hugely popular and had used that to help it get its foot in the door.

People complained then as well.

Yes they did but people seem to have forgot about that and now they have come to accept Steam.

It's a bit early to be saying "OMFG They are only doing it because of BF3" they did the same for CS and no one thinks about it now.

It doesn't do something as broad as that though. It identifies software and hardware installed, just like steam. No where does it say they will sell it either.

Yeah you're right. You had to install steam to play 1.6 and shortly after they closed down the old master server so you couldn't even play 1.5 if you wanted to. EA needed a game like battlefield to get Origin installed just as valve needed 1.6 to get steam installed.

People are living in a dream world if they think all the big publishers are going to continue paying valve a percentage of every sale until eternity. There's going to be numerous distribution platforms. May as well just accept it.

Just because you come to accept something over time, that does not mean you should openly accept it time and time again because it could become a real problem like Rroff pointed out and only the foolish wait to complain when it has become a problem.

I have added friends to xfire, steam, Origin, GFWL and now i hear that you still have to added friends again in BF3, if Origin was meant to be anything like steamworks for BF3 then you would not have to do it twice.

I have already stopped using Xfire because I'm fed up of duplication.

So every publisher should pay valve because they got there first? lol! I'm sorry but the odd person refusing to buy BF3 because of origin will have absolutely no impact.
