**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Im finding this quite hard to get used to.
Obviously my build order is all screwed and I havent learnt much about the units yet but that will come in time. But I am finding it hard to pull myself away from the Company of Heroes/Dawn of War 2 cover usage :/

I played those games quite abit, and find it odd to not have to consider cover or flanking, but then I guess it is Starcraft :)

Also Im not finding the graphics are that great? I mean sure its an RTS, and the cutscenes are fantastic, but I would have expected the game to look abit nicer with everything dialled upto 11.

as far as i know there isnt any cover mechanic in the game, i think i remember there being some in SC1/BW, there were certain trees that would provide cover? however there is massive amounts of flanking involved in the game. More so multiplayer than vs AI. Flanking is the only way Zerg can beat Terran lol ^^

Its a Blizzard game, i can't think of one with good gameplay graphics at all ^^
For an RTS.. and Blizzard game, i think their pretty good, but then i've never been one for games with graphics, prefer playability.

Can imagine it being extreamly strange trying to play without the mechanics your used to though lol :)

When you play 2v2/ 3v3 is this still ranked and has matchmaking/ placement matches etc? Or is that only for 1v1?

You can play 1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 / 4v4 on the ladder using the matchmaking system, you can also play custom games of it that arent via the matchmaking system and arent ranked

Nope no cover but high ground and cliffs really do play there part.

Very true, especially seige units like collosi, tanks, brood lords... Infestors are also good with cliffs :)

Can you bind a key to buildings?

Yep, you can bind keys 0 through to 9 to any unit or building.
just click the building/unit and press CTRL + number

double tapping that number will focus the screen on that building.
i find it really usefull hotkeying your main building to instantly pop back there if anything happens ^^

also, tapping the space bar will focus on recent events.. although personally i don't use it much

The Blizzard "downloader" is disgusting. It enables P2P by default and uploads at over 50KB/s, which cripples the download speed - disable it and the direct connection to Blizzard is dramatically faster. I can't believe they think it's acceptable to make other internet users pay for the bandwidth and not do so themselves. Steam doesn't do crap like this. At the bare minimum they should include an upload limiter.

Yep it's terrible and has also been like that for years as they do it with World of Warcraft too.

Ah, thought you could only use ctrl+# for units.

Have been using Ctrl+F# for camera locations but it's a bit annoying having to switch to mouse to select a building!

Is there anyway to select nearest active builder unit? Looked through options but couldn't see anything. Or do you just designate a Ctrl+# to one?

Turn it off then! I got 1.5mb/s. Whole game download was done in just under 2 hours

A little disappointed to be honest! :(

I've never player Starcraft so maybe I dont have a great understanding of its heritage but to me it just seems a bit basic!
I'm not sure why but I expected a bit more variety other than just different type of units!
I'm a CoH player so I expected simple things like cover and turning the front of a tank so the armour is at the front and it takes less damage to be incorporated!

I've had a go on the (admittedly) good looking storyline but multiplayer is where its at for me and it just seems to be biggest force = win!
Also, the damage amount doesnt give you much time to react if you get attacked by a superior force and forget about running away as you seem to get mullered!

Decent game which I will persevere with but after all the hype I cant help but feel a little disappointed! :(

Just my opinion...

problem with the practice league is that it effeectively turns into a 'whoever builds quickest and the most units wins' approach....its good for learning of course but the rocks are stupid as it prevents proper scouting and early rushes. effectively making you go the whole tech tree to have a chance of winning.

Not sure, If i need anythign built i normally select a random worker to build, never have one designated for it really. but you can ctrl+# if you want too :)

Keep up with the hotkeying though, it will improve your gameplay over time by loooads!

When i play Terran i normally have these hotkeys (early to mid game, late game normally they get changed a lot due to having more units to hotkey)
1-4 Units Marines, Marauders, Hellions, Tanks etc...
5 Barracks' with tech lab
6 Barrakcs' with Reactor
7-9 - Factories/Starports
0 - Command centre for scans.. i hotkey this to 4 early game when i have very few units, because its closer to "S" and "E" keys for SCV/Mule

It's not biggest force wins though, you can counter bigger forces with smaller ones if you counter with the right units. Using unit abilities well has an impact also.

Why are marines so overpowered :D

I've just been facerolling everything on hard in the campaign with stimpack marines and medics/medivacs.

Bunker crawling is also quite nasty with the upgraded capacity and armor. :o

yea i said something similar last page and i got the 'roflmaoeyes, LOLAGE, YOU SUCK' type comments. oops. a fanboy scorned is a fanboy at his most dangerous it seems.

but at least its not just me who thinks the whole 'blob-opple' concept of creating the super megaforce korean WTHBBQ style with no accounting for tactics concept is a little bit dated and basic...

but i did say ill butt out of this thread as i dont want to spoil it for those who enjoy it.

i still might pick SC2 up for a quick blast in short time frames if i can find it on the cheap.

Its not that I dont LIKE it - I could happily play away on the single player I'm sure - its just not the "next-gen" RTS that I think I was expecting!

Just seems to be a bit of a step backwards with not even including elements that have proven popular with other RTS's!

Like I said, I'll persevere and see if it grows on me but at the moment, CoH is top of my list for this sort of game!

its **** easy game

as has been said, put research into advancing your medics and marines and you will faceroll it. I have not failed a mission yet.

Also but research points into base defenses and the zerg wont touch you.

Im loving it though, not played much multi but the SP is the best ive played since Red Alert 2.

Been up till 1.30am on school nights last two nights.......im a bad little boy :(
