**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Do you think the best (only) way to get better is to play in 1 vs 1 matches?

I need to use hotkeys more as I only use 5,6,7.. for my nexus and 1,2,3 for first control groups.

When I do try and scout early on I end up suffering because I forget to build probes, gateway, cybernetics etc

Yes. It's not the only way but 1v1s and customs are probably the best way to improve :)...

Hm. Well my hotkey setup tends to be 4 for nexi (nexuses?), 5 for gateways, 6 for robos, 7 for stargates and 0 for forges. Then 1-3 for unit control groups. Works well enough for me..

Yeaaa you'll find that until you're used to it. Maybe you could practice against AI until you're comfortable dealing with the micro/macro balance? At the end of the day at that stage of the game it's basically a matter of knowing when you need to be back at your base building your next pylon or your cyber core or your second gas. That just really comes with practice :)

bind 4 to all nexus's (nexi?!?)

I have ctrl&4, ctrl&5,ctrl&6 etc to each nexus. Can you use 4 and press 4 to go through them all or do you have to manually assign hotkeys somewhere?

I normally have 1-2 for my army, 3 for observer (or later on, for collosus/HT), 4 for nexus, 5 for robo (or SG if I go for stargate). With all nexuses on 1 hotkey, you can just select them all, rally them to whatever worker line and press e however many probes you want to build... No need to have them all grouped individually.

I'd say just keep playing single player games til you start winning... What I did all the way from bronze to platinum was just learn the build order of a 4gate by practising maybe 3 or 4 times against a computer (make sure you can get it all finished within literally a few seconds of when it is supposed to), then use it on ladder. Keep going until you are maybe gold standard - it shouldn't take more than a few dozen games to get reasonable and I found it really helped me to get a good grip of the game really quickly... I very very quickly learned how to produce probes constantly for the early game and pylons at the necessary times. It also gave me the correct mindset needed to get past silver - making the best possible use of money in the most efficient order to get everything done just in time for when it's needed.

I ctrl+shift and click all nexuses/nexi?+forges into one group. Doing this binds all probe production/chronos into single key and can easily see your forge upgrades on the go and see when they're idle. Easy peasy lemon squeazy.

Any team games tonight?

I dont get how team games and ranked - I was just in a battle with two bronze player (myself as silver) against a gold and two high silver.

Needless to say my teammates were smashed to bits then I got steam rolled by all three a few minutes later

edit - and what do people base the strategy of "rush 5/6 mins" on? Its not like no-one else knows this amazing strategy

Instead of using Ctrl+# to put something in a control group (overwriting anything that was preiviously in that particular group), you can do Shift+# and it will add those units/buildings to it.

So if you have your main as #4, then you click your natural nexus and press shift+4 you'll have your main and natural on #4 :).

You can also select things in different places by shift clicking, so click main nexus, go to natural and shift click nexus and you'll have both selected (then you can either ctrl+# or shift+# to create/add them to a control group, or build stuff from both, obviously :p).

Control clicking will select all units/buildings of that type on the screen (good way of checking probe saturation at a certain base quickly :)).

Thanks, ill try and take some of that in when a bit less hungover!

Is there a counter to siege tanks in siege position? 4 of them just rolled in surrounded by marines and their range was too great for anything, even upgraded range collolus. They just shell the crap out of them then slowly into my base

Yeah carriers don't counter anything except super later game as they take forever to build.

Immortals (make sure you focus fire the seige tanks, otherwise they will just shoot the marines) and charge zealots will kill seige tanks - even with marines.... Charge zealots are super good... just get a nice arc and then a move in. Worst thing to get is stalkers/sentries

Still quite a while for HotS then...

Just played a game:
