**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

There is no game mechanic which does this, you just have to micro manage your units.

 Medieval Total war could easily do it. I could line up 20 archers behind a group line of 30 swordsmen and move them forward together

I could also do it in myth - the fallen lords too. I remember attacking a group with a line of dwarfes using petrol bombs! :)

and thats why those games arent played at a competative level ;)
one button fixes all in games like that, it takes real skill to micro effectivly!

So there are game mechanics that allow for it, but Starcraft doesnt. Everyone uses hotkeys to save time too, if you are going to not allow formations you might aswell turn off hotkeys. You can click the map then select the building with the mouse. No need to press H for hatchery or whatever. I do this because I find it easier that hunting through hotkeys. I just use ctrl+1, ctrl+2, ctrl+3 for groups of units

When you micro units like bandlings, you would have to select each in individually then select where to attack. By which time it would be too late and they would have been spotted and killed

we're talking about the possible.. not the impossible. hotkeys are totally different to formations of units. its a totally different mechanic.

also not forgetting, Starcraft was released in 1998? or there abouts!
its never had any formations for units, and they have obviously kept true to the origional in SC2. Most likely to keep the huge huge fanbase happy that it already has. Starcraft doesnt need formations, its not that kind of strategy game.
the TotalWar series are a totally different ballgame!

Formations reduce the number of Actions Per Minute (APM) a player requires to play the game, the skill level required to play the game and imo the entertainment for the spectators of the game. Hotkeys increase the APM and therefore the skill required to play the game effectively.

This game is designed with the competitive game industry in mind.

If you want to use banelings effectively there are 2 things you can do.
1) if your enemy does not have detection, find a choke on the map spread your banelings out across that choke and wait for the enemy to cross it, when he does pop up your blings and watch them cause havok.
2) In an open field battle send your roaches in the front your lings round the back to stop a retreat and then send your blings in a few at a time in the gaps

In terms of hot keys I'm not using them myself at the moment, because I have not taken the time to memorise them for Zerg. However I was using them very successfully as Protoss when I starter playing the Beta. What I did to memorise them was write them all down in fairly large writing on a sheet of paper and stand it next to my monitor (leaned up against my hifi) so that it was within sight as I was playing. I think I mastered most of the probe, nexus, gateway, robo hotkeys.

For zerg I only know the Hatch, and burrow hot keys. But I will start to learn the drone ones soon.

Ok ta indie and manlove. Can bandlings, or any burrowed unit for that matter, detect enemy units when burrowed? Seems daft that burrowed can be detected but cannot detect

Very much doubt it...but would any of you great players out there mind helping me?

I keep on getting slaughtered or win the very boring games. This is a child in need :rolleyes:
