**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Sorry to be such a bonehead but can someone walk me through exactly what sort of game this is??

Is it an RTS like Dawn Of War/Company Of Heroes or is it a lot more??

I've seen all the hype and just wondered what to expect given that I've never played the first one??

Thanks...

Its got some aspects of DoW/CoH yes...

However, it doesnt really focus on taking control of points to gain resources. its not really "capture the flag-esque" in that sence

You also don't build/train "squads" of units either. you buy a marine.. you get a marine. one single unit type thing. which makes micro quite important. Its a very deep game! lol

Its quite hard to explain really, your best bet is to watch a video of somebody playing... Or maybe some of the beginner tutorial videos on youtube. they will be much slower paced so you'll see whats going on.

I think user "EpicCarnage" actually runs a site for all these..(correct if im wrong.. link is below anyway)

But then most people playing on BN will be 10yr old SC veterans that already by the time open beta started had 10 milion tactics worked out with perfect knowledge of everything in the game.

So unless you're super good RTS player, you'll most likely get anihilated in every game within the first 10minutes, which is why I'd love a good campaign - somewhere when I can just start the game and relax because I don't have whole day to study tactics anymore.

Maybe if they make some sort of match making system that would help less hardcore players I guess.

After you play a few placement matches it puts you into a division of people roughly your own skill level, so unless you play customs games you should be playing against people within a close skill level to you. At least that is how it is supposed to work anyway, some people still get matched against higher division players.

So yes you may got owned at first by SC1 veterans, but tbh thats how it should be. But after placement matches you should hopefully be playing with people your own skill level.

It's not really like dow or coh. It's a resource driven game, very, very tradiational.

You have a central command building, it produces workers, you build lots of workers and get more resources which you then spend on unit producing buildings, upgrade researching buildings and of course units.

The more resources you have, the more research you can do, the more units you can build, the more unit producing buildings you can build.

It's pretty much like c&c (the first one). Not much has changed in the basic gameplay mechanics.

What makes it special is the amount of diversity you can manage within these simple mechanics.

In single player, I'm really not sure what to expect specifically. But the game at it's very basics will be about harvesting resources and building units and attacking stuff.

So its a cross between Anno 1404/The Settlers and Dawn of War but set in space ala X3/Homeworld!?!?

I'll check out some videos to see if its gonna be for me!

Thanks guys.......

There is a match making system after you complete placement matches. You are then put into a league - copper, bronze, silver, gold, platinum and now I think there is a diamond league aswell.

I got ****ed off with re-doing placement matches after so many beta patches and league resets so i just stuck to instant games. In these there were a mix of some good players, some players who knew nothing at all and some who had clearly been playing for years. This mix of skill made for some very interesting games where a very skilled player had to defend a noob or 2 and the opposite side had 2 or 3 average players who could either take out the noobs or go for the pro player all together :D

I will re-do my placement matches and see what league I end up in, my guess is that I get into low copper or high bronze as I am not that good really.

there is a matchmaking system included, so even if you are new to the game you will be separated from the "pros".

You play 5 placement matches which determins your league. then once your in a league you will play people from the same league. If you get high up in that league you'll play vs players that are lower down in the league above to see if your ready to move up etc... Its actually quite good :)

It worked out OK in the first beta phase, seemed to be spot on for the 2nd phase.. for me at least!

What's the experience going to be like for completely new players? I'm quite intrigued by this but haven't played any of the Beta or know anything really about the game. I was going to wait for some reviews, but want to know that by waiting I'm not going to spend the majority of my time on the receiving end of noob-stomps. What's the community like?

I've been playing a lot of HoN, so my community awareness is really high!

Personally i've always enjoyed the community of Starcraft. Even back in the day it seemed to be very mature. Obviously you get the odd eejit/sore loser but youi'll get that with every community.

The game itself is without a doubt brilliant. Blizzard are also catering for the lesser skilled players too, theres a match making system that puts you in a league with players of a similar ability, and you have the chance to move up and down depending on how you perform etc.

Its a very deep game, with great balance and a whole bunch of units. Its also quite a steep learning curve should you wish to play at a higher level.

In my ignorance i completely forgot to pre-order, what do people think my chances are of being able to pick up a copy at HMV/Game tomorrow?

It's not as if it's free gold dust, you'll be able to get a copy (that is if you live in London your chances might be slimmer).

Never pre-ordered where I love and they've had bucketloads in stock.

edit - just looked at your local, try a supermarket at midnight?

did not work out that way in the beta test

There was only a few thousand people in the beta. Mostly hardcore fans. Everyone and their mother will be playing SC2 so the skill levels will be far more varied and the matchmaking system will be a lot better.

edit: SC2 is live in south east asia :(:(:(
