**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Yeah just the basics really, I don't want to do a ling rush as I don't like the tactic, but other then that...you have the bog standard 1/1/1, 3 rax, builds for terran, or 4gate protoss, what are the basic zerg builds?

In short... there isn't really one. Zerg are much more complicated than Protoss or Terran.. however, we do have a fairly safe and standard build order.. which is as follows :)

- Drones up until 9 population and save 100 minerals for Overlord
- While your Overlord is building pop up another drone. that takes you to 10/10
- Your Drone and Overlord should pop out at the same time and you should have 2-3 Larva ready. Turn them into Drones. This should take you to 13/18.

(At some point in the above. its best to send out a scout)

- Currently at 13/18. What i normally do is pump out another Drone, taking me to 14/18, at the same time, Lay down my first Gas Extractor. Get another Drone at the same time to keep you at 14/18.
- Save 200 minerals and lay down your Spawning Pool. Start 3 Drones Harvesting gas.
- Drone up untill you are 15/18. Then pop out an Overlord when you have 100 minerals. Then save minerals untill Spawning Pool is done.

If all goes to plan, When your Spawning Pool is complete, you will have 100gas and around 300ish minerals. That gives you enough to start your Zergling Speed upgrade (hence early gas)*, and 3 sets of Zerglings.

- Save your next 150 Minerals for your Queen. its very important to get her out ASAP, no brainer, more Larva is more units.

Now, the idea behind this build is that its quite easy to adapt to daft cheese strategies** and also gives you early map control so you can get your expansion*** up quicker (against Terran & Protoss) or early pressure (Zerg). So.. its safe, AND it gives you the opportunity to be aggressive at the same time with your lings. The very presence of them being there can force players to turtle more than they should, or force them into silly mistakes.
It also gives you the option of teching into anything, so you have a much easier method of adapting to whatever their doing. for example, if they fast banshee, pop down a hydra den ASAP, get an Overseer and Spore or 2 at your main and natural expansion.

*Early Zergling speed is vital to gaining map control.
- Against Zerg, its a no brainer, faster lings are more effective.
- Protoss, If you can run qicker than Zealots, then you can harass very very effectivly, he can lose probes/pylons while you Drone up your expo.
- Terran, will generally either go for fast reapers, in which Speedlings rape.. Or Hellions, which, again with decent micro, Zerglings can over-run

** Your scout should spot this. I normally send mine just after my first Overlord pops out. You will need to adapt if they cheese, get your pool down ASAP, and get another Overlord so you can make us all of your available Larvae for lings. If needed, Spine Crawlers help, and can later be transferred to guard your expansion.

*** If im going for a fast expansion, Once i've mined the 100 gas for my Lings Speed upgrade, i pull the 3 drones from the gas and back to mienrals. I'll then expand at around 22-24 Population. Pulling the 3 drones obviously so i can get more minerals for the extra Hatchery, more Lings, and/or Spine Crawlers. Again, you will need to adapt to what the enemy is doing. More Spine Crawlers & Zerglings if they look offensive, more Drones if they look like their turtling or teching.... don't forget to put your drones on the gas once your expo has started building, you'll need your Lair soon!

NOTE: Keep your scout alive in their base as long as you can, even if it means capping one of their gases and cancelling it if your being attacked. The more you know what their doing, the better you can adapt and prepare.

Though if you're on tonight I would be grateful for a few pointers - I don't have a huge amount of time though. Macgyver/619.

I'll be on late tonight, like 11pmish. If not then i'll be on most of the week. late afternoon/evening.

Thanks, excellent post. You mentioned 4 drones on the gas, do zerg farm gas slightly differently then?

sorry, meant 3.. typo! ill edit it out.

EDIT: Done!

Also, if you build Spine Crawlers, don't forget to replace the drones you use :)

Let me know if parts don't make sence, I have Skype etc so can physically talk you through it if needed, sometimes its easier i guess :)
although i have a tendancy to ramble on, like i do in my posts ^^

I think that will take a bit of getting used too, the drones being used up in the construction process.

Still, I'll play some normal AI tonight to practise a build order or two.

I take it your all fans of star craft 2, so maybe Im asking the converted, but... is this game worth shelling out £35 for?

Might buy it tonight.

I love rts, especially back in the day's of red Alert 2, so is this any good, for multiplayer fun?

I here, its for hardcore only? Im not hardcore, just want to have some fun.

Id get crushed against hard core opponents, not looking to devote my life to bing a SC2 strategist!

I was about to ask a similar question as i'm in almost the same situation.

I used to be really into RTS games, but never played the original Starcraft. Is it an easy game to get into?

Well, I'd have to say yes, it's worth the money.

The game is really geared towards multiplayer, but there's still a great single player campaign to go through which is a lot of fun.

As for you vs "hardcore" players I wouldnt worry. Blizzard have made a good ranking system which puts you into one of 5 leagues (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond). Then each time you want to play a ladder match, it'll try to match you against people of your skill level.

So ideally you'll lose about half of your matches, but they should be against people of your skill level :)

Also there are plenty of custom maps, along with an editor which can convert the game from an RTS to..well..anything really, have even seen some FPS maps :D.

Starcraft is a great example of a game which is "easy to learn, difficult to master". The units and their abilities are fairly straightforward, and the maps are simple.

to both of the above.. Alex just summed it up! :) caters for all... even those that like achievements and things like that

the single player alone is worth the £35, one of the best stories I've had from any game. It does lead on from the first game and expansion, however during install, it briefs you so you don't miss out :D

How do you stop fast marine rushes? So annoying. The guy I just played pulled four SCVs off his mineral line to scout the spawns so ok, knew where I was before I knew where he was. He then built two barracks outside my base naturally, spammed marines and hey presto game over. How on earth does someone with that economic hit still manage to build two barracks and 6 marines in <5 minutes, and how can you stop that?

this is where your timings come in. If you see an early scout, then start preparing for something cheesey... or at least expect it. If he's just pumping marines, then spine crawler his ass. marines don't touch em. also don't forget your lings for distracting him... remember, don't lose your units, just dance around him so it confuses him. buying you time to get your spines up, and eventually you'll be able to 1 base sling/bling his ass... pure marines gets slaughtered fairly easy.. even if he mixed in marauders its game over for him, because you'd still have a massive economical advantage.

EDIT: if i havn't answered the question or have jsut confused the hell out of you ^^, post the replay and i'll watch it when i get home tonight :)

To be honest the 3v3,4v4 games cater to the 'non-hardcore', so the single player campaign is very good (even if the story is hokey, the gameplay is superb). And the multiplayer is very deep.

If you're scared off by how hardcore it can seem (and not going to sugar coat it, it is hardcore), the 3v3, 4v4 games will give you a good load of fun with less stress.

At the end of the day the very best thing in starcraft imo has always been playing team games with friends.

Had a really good day laddering today, won most of the games I played.

Was quite depressing how many zergs in high plat/low diamond rely on a 6 pool to win games though :(. Seemed to be routine for one person who just gg'd after i'd held the front of my base. Most zergs seemed to at least try to transition into roaches or lair tech, despite the huge disadvantage. Funnily enough PvZ is the matchup i'm least confident with :p but if everyone just 6 pools i may be sorted. Hoping this'll change to more interesting long-term builds as i move up the ladder.

The one matchup I dont seem to get cheesed in is PvP (although one guy pulled off an amazing carrier rush, which made me laugh when i finally scouted it :D). Consistently seems to be a case of being "the first player to get colossi wins" though. I'm not fond of teching on one base, but it seems to be a necessity in PvP

So I'm wiping-out this dude's last base, and the git types:

"has left the game"

 :D

lulz :p

I haven't had a chance to play more than 2-3 games in the last week :(. Really need to get back into the ladder matches, I love the competitiveness.

yeah same here, it seems this week, which i had NOTHING planned for at all, has filled itself up rather quickly with stuff to do after work!!

need to get cracking on the tournament too, finish it off!
