Os performance for games

For the most part, XP is giving better performance right now.

I'm sure a lot of other Vista owners will be along soon though, to tell you that the difference is negligible in most cases, and that Vista offers DX10 support etc etc.

I would have thought that over a certain point(ie: fps etc)it wouldnt make any difference what OS your running

Oh btw, a Vista user here :p

I used Vista and I haven't had any problems with game performance. That said, I can't compare my old rig on XP to my new rig on Vista - so there may be a noticeable difference. Personally, the only thing that bugs me about 64bit Vista is certain compatabilities and little niggles.

I use Vista x64 again not noticed anything different from XP. However, as the previous poster, I have upgraded my PC.

Personally wouldn't go back to XP but that's my personal preference and as more and more games (UT3 being an example) are supporting the 4 cores and also 64-bit architecture it would be wise to move to an operating system that supports it.

XP used to be faster in many cases for me, but after SP1 (RC2), and ripping out and disabling all the components I don't need, I honestly don't think there's anything in it anymore - on my machine at least :)

Google XP vs Vista (or vice versa) I'm sure there will be millions of links that prove it both ways (i.e. Vista being faster than XP and vice versa).

And most are out dated based on old drivers and updates.

I'll have a check in a moment.

There's not much in it anymore, since the graphics card manufacturers got their act in gear as regards drivers. The thing to remember about Vista 64 is that it makes much better use of multiple cores and large amounts of ram than XP does. You probably won't start to see the difference this makes yet though, until games start to utilise multiple cores more efficiently and require more than 3gb of memory.

Short version - if you're wondering which o/s to put on a new PC, there's no reason not to use Vista. If you've got a core2duo, you're mad to use XP, you're just crippling your cpu.

I have 2 seperate drives each with vista and xp and to be honest i rarely touch xp anymore.
I was a fairly new adopter of XP when it came out and same also with vista.
Xp was terrible at the beginning and it took until sp2 to completely iron out the bugs. Vista in the other hand is as good as xp now or is at least very close to it and to be honest it handles every game i throw at it.

yeah vista handles everything i chuck in its direction very nicely with multi-display etc too. Its not a downgrade from xp.

Its a side step, like ME.

No it's not.

There are a lot more functions in Vista than the jump from 98SE to ME including a hell of a lot more stability. There are loads of debates on this in the Windows forums this is a performance question with regards to vista vs xp nothing else.
