Hey guys quick question i have a 500gb WD and i just wanted to know how many gigs i should partition for the os and program files ?

Depends how many applications you have...!

For me, I've got an 80GB SSD for Windows 7 and core apps then another 100GB for additional applications.

how many core apps do you have?

Personally I've currently got a 40GB partition on my laptop.. with 15GB free. That's with Win7, Office '07, Visual Basic (amongst others) and if I exclude pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys, and the one game I have installed on there, that leaves me using.. wait for it.. less than 12GB

Windows 7 folder is 14GB
Hiberfile.sys is 6GB
Pagefile.sys is 8GB
Progs 2.38GB at present

Total 30GB before we even start talking about Windows Updates, service packs, new apps...

It's so annoying to underspecify you System drive that I'd rather over specify it

I don't intend to rebuild this OS until the next version of Windows is out!

The 100GB is just allocated as I've got loads of disk space loitering about and it was a nice round number...
