Ouch!

I thought that, that dog would be subject "to be destroyed" as it attacked a human without reason. thats what I thought anyways, of course it depends

This is why i hate little dogs like terriers, they are much more prone to biting than say a larger dog, only they dont get the media attention they deserve!

Not when its on its own property, in public yes but you can have really viscious guard dogs (scrap yards etc)

My dog insurance actually gives a reward for him stopping an intruder which leads to prosecution.

KaHn

It had reason the fingers were trespassing on it's territory.

not as clear cut as that unfortunately.
Had the issue when one of my gsd attacked a burglar on my mum farm, had to prove within reasonable doubt that the person caused a significant risk to the dog, people on the area and property. Luckily we had security cameras that saw him brandishing a breaker bar.

I remember a lot of nasty dogs when I used to do my paper round, but most houses had mail catchers or outside postboxes so it wasn't any sort of problem. Occasionally a dog would grab the paper though which gives you quite a shock. One dog did this repeatedly but stopped after I accidentally rammed it in I think I hit it in the face :s

Its quite easy to avoid just don't go sticking your hand/fingers right in

My first thought, however a card is quite small and the temptation to stick your hand into the letter box to push it right through is there.. When you've posted quite a few, you'd do this by habit..

Must've hurt poor girl..!!

Surely the owner would take steps to protect people like the postman?

You thik he would do if the dog has habits of doing this.
I mean it is normal for fingers to enter a letter box when posting mail in, if you have a dog that bites when doing this then you get a guard!

Poor gal!

Exactly - the letterboxes in our cul-de-sac are all the same design, draught excluder brushes front and back, so posting something like a business card requires it to be pushed all the way through otherwise it will be trapped inside the door.

This isn't the dogs fault, it's the owners, and it's he that should be punished for not making the letterbox safe by way of a fine or something.

Nope, the dogs are also to blame. See below.

I've done a paper round in the past and completely agree with the above statement. It's not uncommon to have a dog sitting behind the letter box waiting for something to snap at and 9/10 they're terriers. Why people would bread let alone own such poisonous, vindictive little animals is beyond me.

Nasty and unlucky stuff, especially to loose an index finger tip. Shame it couldn't have been recovered straight away, as I sliced/crushed my finger off and down the middle and got it put back together and apart from a large scar works fine. Personally id want the dog dead.

I m not saying "i think he/she(the dog) should be"

I just thought this girl would have got some warning that the dog is there before she stuck her fingers through the letter box, as dogs normally give

personally I thing a dog should only be put down if attacked without warning and reason, not for doing its job( guard dogs etc) than if they do it should be on a 3 strikes rule.

Dog owners need to take responsibility. Our dog used to jump up and snatch the post. I started training him to stop doing it, but to be safe I put a cage behind the letter box to protect anyone. Even a sign is not good enough, it could be missed.

Dogs can be dangerous animals. You have to be responsible when owning one. If my dog hurt someone it would be my fault, no doubt. I've let that person down.

Postmen are told NOT to put fingers in letterboxes, but it's easy to forget sometimes and some dogs sit silently waiting to attack with no warning.

In my experience, some dog owners usually blame the person for doing wrong and not themsleves or their pet. They get mad when postmen refuse to deliver to their property due to a dangerous dog. That's stupid.
