Out of date sausages

Pfft... People worry about use by dates too much! As long as it doesn't smell too much or look weird then its fine! My ex always used to moan at me for cooking food that was a few days out of date.. Never did either of us any harm though, just learned to hide the packaging better when she was around! :D

Well I wouldn't worry about a day or two depending on what food it was but definitely not a week out of date! Some foods you have to be much more careful with as well.

You have to remember use by dates have to be very tight, to make sure every single item is still good if stored correctly. This means pretty much everything can be eaten well passed the use by date. Including chicken and sausages. Just make sure they smell and feel fine and cook properly.

Out of date sausages tend to smell like they're fermenting... you'd notice generally if it was going to be bad for you.

They had a kind of vinegary sort of smell when i was cooking them. I just assumed it was because they were a different brand from what I usually buy :(

Go back to the shop, see if you can find another pack on the shelf and take photos of a few. Then hold him to ransom. Should get a few quid.

I usually take that into account but I don't like risking it with chicken with the children as I don't eat meat anyway but wouldn't want them to get ill. Just going by smell won't always be enough. I think if you're likely to need or want to use something past its use by date then freeze it to be on the safe side.

I remember one thread about a similar incident a few years back. The sausages grew mouldy in his stomach, the mould grew and grew until eventually his stomach burst inside him and he died of sepsis.

They're hardly going to grow mouldy when I've nuked them for 10mins on the george foreman are they
