Out of the CPU loop, upgrade advice please

Hi guys,

The last time I upgraded my PC I upgraded the CPU to a 4790k, and ever since then I haven't really kept up with the CPU side of things.

Given the next gen of consoles arriving soon and Microsofts push to have every first party title on PC as well as the new Xbox, I am looking to upgrade my rig pre Holiday 2020.

With that in mind, are there any current CPU's that are worth upgrading to that are price effective for a purely gaming rig? and if not, are there any due out this year that are anticipated to be "the ones" to upgrade to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated please, thank you :)

What are the rest of your specs, GPU in particular? Also what resolution do you play at, as well as your budget for the upgrade?

While there are benefits from upgrading your CPU, if your GPU is from the same era you're likely to see much bigger improvements from a GPU upgrade.

My current GPU is a 980Ti, but I will be looking to upgrade that as well, but that's another minefield i've yet to truly navigate.

I am looking to spend £250/300 max on the CPU, and i'm looking for one that will give me the longest tail before I need to upgrade again, if at all possible to predict.

I currently game at 1080p, but I do have a 1440p monitor available to me that I will be utilising after the upgrade, hopefully this helps? :)

Ryzen 3700X (£285) with a B450 Tomahawk Max (£89). And when you need to upgrade you can put on the motherboard a 3900X/3950X or the upcoming Ryzen 4000 series of CPUs.
And here have look for the RAM if you don't want to spend £100 for a 3600C16 kit

tbh unless its holding you back wait till end of the year. litterally all games your cpu overclocked wont be much slower than a 3700x. id wait for the next amd cpus near christmas. which are about 15 percent on whats out now. so you will notice the difference.

on the other side you maybe able to get good money now for your old stuff. so it maybe worth considering.so as above .

Problem is the OP going to buy at the end of the lifecyrcle of a CPU again as did with the 4790K. By the time he buys the system it would be 2021, then why not wait for AM5 which is all new?

atleast he will notice a better difference. yeah the arguement of you can always wait longer but 3700 vs 4790k in games is literally nothing.

what id actually do is sell his stuff he has. do the am4 stuff and buy a cheap 2700 till the new chips come out.they 120 quid with borderlands 3 . sell the game for £20. you have a 100 quid 8 cpu which isnt far off the 4790k in speed. the 4790k will basically pay for the cpu. so the swap will be dirt cheap. then stick in the new better amd cpu at end of the year.

With a 980TI agreed he will see little difference in most games, however if he does upgrade to a GPU much more powerful, like a 2070 or 2080 the 4790K will strangle it to death, the 3600 wont.

Its about future proofing.

Thank you very much for the advice so far guys, I guess to further add to the reason to upgrade is the fact i'll be on DDR4 ram, m.2 SSD's etc, I do feel quite "dated" with my current setup, the GPU upgrade will definitely be coming as well later in the year, so I do feel like upgrading now will see benefits not only now, but massive benefits in a few months time?

Just moving from a quad core will show gains. When I moved from a 4.8Ghz skylake to a Ryzen 1800X I seen a huge improvement in fame times even with a R9 290.

The next round of Ryzen is closer to a year away.

If you do upgrade to a modern GPU with a lot more performance the 4790K just wouldn't drive its performance, its fine with a 980TI but with a 2070 or higher not only will it hold performance back it will probably stutter in a few games due to its 4 HT threads being locked to 100% load

The 3600 is a 6 core 12 thread CPU with much higher IPC, its quite close to an 8700K in outright performance which is a much more expensive CPU.

Dg is right, at lest with the 980TI you're not going to see a lot of difference in most games due to the GPU being the bottleneck, having said that if you play CS:GO or any other ancient Source Engine game you would probably see your FPS near double.

If you do some productivity work on the side again your performance will likely near double.

Your system is old, if you like high performance you're going to have to bite the bullet at some point and with Ryzen 3000 now is as good a time as any.

I'm gonna go for the 3600 I think guys, that price for a full CPU, RAM and Mobo upgrade is just far to tempting, I had no idea it was THAT good. What is Ryzen like for OC'ing, I currently have a Watercooled setup but I am looking to get away from it due to convenience. A solid AIO cooler would cope just fine with the new CPU I would presume?

The Wraith cooler that came with my 3800x works just fine but i am sure aftermarket coolers will be better but your chioce bud

Depends on the silicone, mine doesn't overclock at all, they aint really supposed to, modern CPU's behave more like GPU's in that they are specifically binned and run as fast as they can out of the box, however lower end SKU's are artificially locked to lower Mhz, like the 3600 which is 4.2Ghz maximum boost, i have seen people run them at 4.4Ghz 24/7. i was not that lucky.

Having said all of that don't place too much emphasise on Mhz, a Ryzen 3000 has very high IPC, at 4.2Ghz per core it like your 4790K at 5.3Ghz.

Run Cinebench R20 on your CPU.

My MT score at 4.15Ghz: Score 3757: AMD Ryzen R5 3600 at 4.15Ghz, humbug
ST score at 4.2Ghz: Score 486: AMD Ryzen R5 3600 at 4.2Ghz, humbug

Edit: here is a Haswell core: Score 400: Intel Core i7 5820K at 4.5Ghz, RevBillyG
