Hi All ... Happy New Year ;)

Long Story Short ... Built a PC a long time ago for gaming/editing/ music...Got a lot of help here from forum members to get the spec that fitted my budget ... Bought all the parts from OCUK and off we went .... Had fun gaming and editing for a long time.... Then life took over and sucked up all my free time ...My Pc just sat in a corner collecting dust in the hope that one day i will get a chance to sit down and play some games :)

So ... That time come !

I fired up my rig ...It kept shutting down on boot up ... I had a mess around in the bios and got it to load windows (XP)...Decided to clear the HD and format ... All went well until i tried reinstall XP... Kept getting blue screens.

I decided to call it a day and hand it over to a repair shop... One of the ram modules had failed ....I asked if it could be replaced and the guy at the shop told me that my ram was old but i can try and RMA it

He then went on to ask me what i want the PC for ... I told him a bit of casual gaming and editing .... He advised me that computers and games have moved on a fair bit since i built this rig and that an updated spec might be in order .... He explained that XP will no longer be supported and that my OS might be a good place to start the update ..... So off i went .... Jumped online to do a bit of research and found that EVERYTHING has changed .... I see products that i have never herd of ... Numbers ...LOT'S of numbers ....Information overload lol

I have been looking around for about a week and trying to make sense of all this new kit and trying to figure out what steps to take first ... So the Basics are .... I have this rig ( Spec Below ).... I don't want to bin it....It would be nice to get some use out of some of the parts ( Maybe even for a NAS server or some kind of storage device ...i dunno )

I have come to the conclusion that i might be better off with a console for gaming and maybe build a rig for editing ( PhotoShop ...CryEngine....Blender ...Maya...FL Studio ect ect ).... Maybe try and use some of my old parts and build a NAS ?? ..... What do you guys think ?

MY OLD Spec

Case : Asus Vento blue ( Love it or hate it .... I love this case :) )
Mobo : Asus A8N32-SLi Delux
Ram : 2x1gig GSkill PC 4000
CPU : AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 2.21GHz 4400+ 1gig
VCard : Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT OC BFG
Psu :Antec 600w
Cpu Fan : Zalman Fatal1ty
HD : 1Tb WD
Sound : None at the moment
OS : XP Pro

Ok guy's ...Thats my story .... What do you think ?
Budget .... Errrm .... I would go up to a grand?

Thank's for looking ... Any Input would be great :)

So this £1000 budget - is that just for the editing rig? Or the editing rig plus a PS4 plus a NAS?

And the editing PC - if you buy a PS4 will you not be using the PC for gaming at all?

And if you don't buy a PS4 can we go to £1400 for a gaming/editing build?

EDIT: Oh my God. I just Googled that case you have. My eyes!

Oh, and do you need a monitor?

LOL ...Your the first in with a "OMG The Case" ....I expect more of that to be honest haha ...But i love it :)

So yeah ..£1000 for a Casual gaming/ Editing rig ....I'm gonna wait for the PS4 to gather speed before i buy one ....Not many games at the moment for me and i think if i hold out i might get a game bundle later this year.

I want a NAS for home use .... Just wondered if i could use any of the parts i have from my old rig?

I would also just like a bit of help with a spec for that budget ... If i can build a decent spec in my case for a bit of gaming and a bit of editing for under a grand i would be happy :)

Thank's :)

No ... all the external stuff is sorted :)....Wife just bought a Monitor to hook up to her lappy ... Asus MX279H 27" IPS LED LCD HDMI Monitor
It has Audio by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower.....It sound's a bit rubbish to me though :)

Keyboard and mouse all sorted

Sure you can use your old PC as a NAS, but you may find a new PC is more power efficient on long term idle - you can set up 'shares' in Windows 8 to act as a NAS.

You can reuse the PSU and HDD from your old PC, and err, nothing else (especially the case) :p

I had the same cpu and mobo as yours except for a 5770 gpu ,4 gig of ram. It did everything I wanted it to except for battlefield 3,played crysis, grid no problem...if ur not playing latest high end games then id replace gpu and add more ram. But it is old tech now and my mobo eventually gave up after about 8yrs of use so I went the intel route instead.

Hiya Fulax :)

Thank's for taking the time to help me out Brother :)

I'v gotten over the shock of all the new gear that's about and how thing's have changed in the last few years .... The ref numbers and jargon sent me a bit blind haha

Ok ... So ...The spec ( Including a v boring case :) ) Is awesome ... Thank you :)

Did some reading ( Of Jargon ) and reviews on some of the products listed and i have a question regarding the Intel 4820K 3.70GHz (Ivybridge-E).. I seen a few comments about it running around 10% hotter than other chips of the same category ..... Is that an issue that most people have ....Is it true ? .... If so ....Is it a problem i need to worry about ?

Apart from that question, Your spec is a great start point for me to start digging in and getting to know whats happening ...So Thank you :)

I'm keeping the Vento ....:)

Hiya Nickjf20 :) .... Or May I call You Nick ? lol

Thanks for your input and helping me on my journey :)

Your spec is also a very good one .... Very different products at different price ranges ,It's another great start point to help me understand whats needed ...... I notice a pattern.... A few of the things you recommend also pop up on a lot of other peoples specs .... This kind of tells me that they must be good and that's what makes them a popular choice :)

I take on board that a NAS system would be better for efficiency in a new machine running Win8 and thank's for the tip on the " Share " function ... I had no idea it even had it .... Good to know thank you :)

Had to make a few decisions over the last couple of days about what it is i need... But in the back of my mind i just wanted to make use of some of my part's if i could .... I just have to accept that i cant and then crack on and upgrade:rolleyes: lol

Read the Below in a Jeremy Clarkson voice in your head :D

Ok .... The case .....The Mighty VENTO ! :)

I remember when i was buying The Vento and the amount of flack i took :) .... BUT ... I also remember the equal amount of ENVY bestowed upon me :p

I know people hate it .... It's like PC Marmite ....People come to my house and notice the Vento at some point ... And the response is always the same " WoW " .... Followed by " Wtf is THAT ? " lol....I don't need flashing LED's .... I don't need glow in the dark connectors and leads .... I don't even need a side window to show of a 4k water cool system ....I have The Vento !

Speech Over .... I thank you :)

Hiya tyketto :).... Thanks for jumping in :)

Glad you agree that my old spec was pretty good value for money ....I remember just after i built the rig playing Americas Army and getting crazy FPS with everything on ultra and then jumping into Crysis and Unreal 3 and been blown away by how well the rig performed :)

I'm gonna just retire the rig ( Not the Case ;) ) and start over, Now that i have been told that Win8 has this share setup it will save a few bucks on a additional NAS .... Bucks i could spend on a one or two parts to upgrade this new rig :)

Now I'm not so blinded by all the jargon i can see the kind of kit i need and i just need to tweak a spec that will do what i need it to do :)

Thanks for your time tyketto :)

Hi All :)

Been doing some reading up on some kit...Been trying to compare decent products and prices...Reading reveues ....Struggling a bit to understand what makes one motherboard better than another for a few quid more if you add an X on the end of the product part number : ) ....While reading im learning a bit though : )

I'm gonna have a stab at a spec and stay within or near my budget....I'm not sure if it will all match or fit ....But i hope to get a few pointers where im going wrong : )

Thanks for looking in :)

First Proposed Spec :)

Hi All ( Anyone Who's Still Listening ) :)

Hope you all had a good weekend :)

Thought i would have a go at a spec myself .... Had to up my budget a bit ...But it's under a grand if you don't show ( The wife ) the total with added VAT ;)

Let me know what you think ....Does it all fit and compat ?... Can I do Better For the cash ?....Can i downgrade a bit ?..... Do i need to Upgrade any parts ?

Thanks for looking :)

Just a quick update to the above post .... I have to add Windows 8.1 to my basket to ...It's an added cost but it will not be added to my budget :)

Looking forward to a bit of feedback :)

Good to see that you're taste in cases has improved ;)

I would change:

1) the PSU. The Builder series isn't Corsair's best.
2) The CPU cooler. Not a fan of the 120mm ones as you can get a 240mm for not much more.
3) The RAM. It could be more colour-coordinated...

Oh, and I added some braided cable extensions.

The h105 is on pre-order - it should be available in a couple of weeks.

EDIT: Hate to add to the budget, but do you have an SSD? We can't send you away with a £1200 build with no SSD.

Hiya Fulax , Doomedspeed , Idleman :D

First Of All .... Thank you for helping me out :)

Your spec's have really given me a good insight into whats decent and what i need :) .... I know it Sounds like I'm changing my mind all over the place ... Coz I AM ahhaha:)....Life is always on the change ...So i roll with it in the hope that i make the right moves at the right time .... Buying computer components is like letting a kid loose in a sweet shop and telling him that he has untill Friday to make the right choices while keeping in mind that the prices may go up or DOWN next week :)

Ok Cases ..... I buckled under the extreme peer pressure and decided to opt for a new case :p..... The Vento will still have a use later on ( I will Find One ) .... So nothing lost :)

Ok Budget ....My budget was based on one thing .... Having to justify the spending to the wife :).....I'm gonna let you guys into a little secret ( Some of you may already know ) .... Women like SHOES ! ;)
I grew up with 4 sisters and kind of understand the workings of the female brain .... It's ALL about shoes .... So here's how i operate in a situation like this .... I set the budget .... i Justify it .... Then while it's being processed by the wife .... I offer to buy her new shoes .... She forgets the budget ( and everything else ) and then i up the budget to a point i feel comfy with :)

I hope this advice helps someone :)

Ok ....Color Coordination ..... I like it :D.... But it set me off on another journey....Added to my budget a fair bit but i think i have come up with a spec that will serve me well ... Look decent ( A bit of bling )...And it will last me a few years giving me more power than i need until some next gen games come along ;)....I hope !

So i offer this spec up for your approval and guidance :)

Thanks for all your help guy's...It's very appreciated :)

Ahhh see how the cost has crept up from an initial budget of £1000, now your at nearly £1,600! This always happens to me when speccing up a PC build for myself!

You could save a bit of cash by going for an AMD 290 graphics card, which has very similar performance to the 780:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

Also the motherboard is very high-end so if you wanted to save some cash you should be able to get a decent one for around £100, perhaps something like this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-438-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2574

Anyway, if you are happy with the costs then what you have specced looks very nice indeed! Pretty much everything in your basket is the highest spec possible lol
