Outhouse conversion

This is in the wrong area, this should be in the home and garden thread as this is a pc related thread and not diy.

I will get this moved.

So how has the man cave thread lasted so long in there when that was a cabin build? With pc addons etc thrown in just like this one?

Looking good so far. Your high-level power sockets will be good for monitor etc but do you not want to run an additional socket down to floor level (plus legal height from floor) to power the PC, speakers etc?

You can also mount the socket faceplate on the top of the plasterboard if you cut the hole smaller - optional of course.
One thing I'd recommend with plaster board is to draw a map of where your wood is with measurements from something you'll be able to see once it's complete. Really helpful if you want to put a shelf or a hook up later. Yes, in theory you can find them later with a stud finder, in practice, they're rubbish.

No such thing as legal height for sockets there are guidelines for new builds but where existing wiring exists you can put the at what ever height is appropriate otherwise if you added a double socket next to an existing one you could potentially have to put it two foot higher!

OP I hope you are inukating behind that plaster board? Is the outhouse already classed as legal living space if not I would certainly look at doing everything to the regs so you're adding value to your house.

Its purely to tidy up the outhouse. Im really only in there till the loft is finished being converted. The plasterboard was just an idea to make it feel a little less old and worn.

Thanks Alex. I should probably have stated the usual disclaimer of I am not a qualified electrician (I know enough to be dangerous! :D). I was just thinking that you don't want it low enough it could get wet should you get a little flooding.

My 5x5 man-cave (3/5ths office, 2/5ths shed) came under permitted development rights. Although I did get planning permission and I tried to involve building control but they weren't really interested. I think that it isn't classified as habitable unless you have plumbing of some kind. If you have a toilet you'll have both kinds of plumbing and you may find your council tax goes up as an additional bedroom or something - I am not a bureaucrat either :p I think I remember reading that if you put a TV aerial up that makes your life complicated too - but that could just be requiring an additional TV license for 'separate' premises. Mine's wired from the house but it's mainly because it was easier for me and I can then run what I want down the cable.

My misses asked me about some plumbing in there and I said a bucket in the corner would be enough... haha. We were considering running some pipework into there for the washing machine as we have a fitted one in the kitchen and 6kg simply isn't enough room for 2 adults and 2 children. its pretty much on 24/7 lol.

I plan to have a TV in there at some point but i'll realistically probably use the internet connection in there to run Netflix / prime or possibly a android box.

I like the idea of marking out where the timber is as my partner wants some shelves put up on the storage section of the outhouse and it could come in very handy.

After I complete this project, I'm kind of lucky sometime in the future i'll get the build log of my loft conversion too, but everywhere I look in the new house I just see £££..joys of buying your own home eh?

Is it normal these days to batten and plasterboard rather than cement and then skim?

Are you insulating behind the boards?

Sometimes, there's been a mix in ours. The main reason for batten and plasterboard in ours was it was an external wall so allowed for insulation as you mentioned.

If you haven't insulated Barron then you should consider it. Just get some Celotex boards.

How much are the celotex boards? really depends on how much extra ££ it'll cost.

I battened a big wall and plasterboarded it. I used 50mm roll insulation. It was quite cheap. Some people use rigid insulation. The 'Roll' insulation is more forgiving if the wall is uneven.

You can buy the right size 'rolled' insulation as i did when i battened and plaster boarded a big wall in my house. I was lucky though as we have a firm locally that provide many types of insulation products.

I've insulated a couple of internal stud walls with loft insulation cut to size and stuffed in it is easy enough to do!

Seems like a shame to cover up the brickwork but can understand why you've done it.

The rustic brickwork alongside some sexy hardware would have been pretty awesome.

Well guys after most of the day in there today it's coming along nicely. I'm almost out of plasterboard until I get paid so will be that last few sections and then some finishing touches. Internet will be installed in there tomorrow and then some lighting fitted as a temp desk assembled and I'm good to go until some more funds come in and are approved by the boss.

Absolutely chuffed with myself. Never done anything like this before. Massive sense of achievement. Recommend it to anyone.

The question to justify your original Project Log thread location is....How well does plasterboard overclock?! ;) :p

Looks good though. I believe you can either tape the joins or fill them before painting. I'm not au fait with the merits of one vs the other though.

Just curious considering the man cave thread has been in there for ages and that started out as a garden project like myself :D

Yeah I've got tape for the joints and a little bit sanding / trimming to do, but the most important bit where the PC is gunna go is done. The rest of the house can wait haha

Well a sort of productive day. The temp desk is put together from the old headboard in the bed room that didn't fit in the new house, fits surprising well and is a decent height too.

Flooring is recycled from our old sitting room. Knew it would come in handy lol
