It's probably worth heading over to outlook.com and grabbing a "@outlook.com" mail address whilst you can. If you only get hotmail.co.uk options when signing up a new account try using a IE inprivate browsing mode or chrome incognito mode window to sign up.
I know there will gmail users who will rant about hotmail and it sucks etc without giving it a chance but personally I quite like it
