Outstanding music in games

Bf1942, my favourite game of all time including the mod desert combat.
Xenon2 for the commodore 64 and Robocop for the c64 which if i remember was used in a tv advert for Ariston shame the game was rubbish oh and not forgetting need for speed. Introduced me to the lost prophets.

Deus Ex menu music.

Invisible War menu music is better IMO.

AS for the OP, yeah, not bad.

Plenty of games (hundreds, probably) have got very good music. However I think the standout cases are ones where it more than just good music, it also fits the game well. Some of the Doom midi stuff is very appropriate, that fast pace almost adds to the tension.

I also like the way Unreal handles the music, ranging from atmospheric background noise as you explore your world through to adrenaline-pumping battle themes (it changes when you enter combat).

OOops, I should mention the Total Annihilation soundtrack! That game was so far ahead of its time anyway but having such an epic and soul crushing soundtrack made it just that much sweeter to play. I'll never forget that eery explorative piece that plays when you first start out a map, using the F key to track your scout planes as the fly across, miles upon miles of barren landscape. You would never expect an RTS to have such a rich atmosphere, but TA did it with ease and finesse.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Everquest 2, that game has bloody fantastic orchestrated music.
Specifically http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUTC3rvWth0

Other games for me are Final Fantasy Tactics, 7,8,9.
Lord of the rings online.
All Zelda games, especially the forest theme before you take the master sword in Zelda 3 - A link to the past.

Recently i thought the Bioshock soundtrack was very well done.
