Ouya: anyone else pre-ordered

Its not really a single platform

Except it is.

Its only USP is the touchpad on the controller

So being absolutely free to develop games, for anyone, isn't a USP? Is the open nature of the console not a USP? Is the free to try of every title released for it not a USP? (I remember when devs cared enough to release demos, now it's "betas" a week before release ). In fact I think the touchpad is the last on the list

but then its even dubious if thats preferable over a normal touch screen experience (which itself isnt great).

No one is forced to support touch controls on the system. You're right, touch gaming sucks, full stop

If you're expecting COD 12 or FIFA 2017 it isn't the console for you, thankfully. I just hope there are enough open minded individuals out there to stop it sinking. I'm going to use mine for media and emu duties so even if it does, it's a bargain

No its not, as other Android devices will be able to utilise the same software as the Ouya, unless you think HTC has its own platform because it has Sense on it while other Android platforms dont?!? :p

Erm again these dont differentiate from other Android devices other than the the touchpad. These arent USPs over and above what Android already supports...

I doubt it will succeed, it fills a gap that isnt really there and doesnt appear to have the backing/marketing to become mainstream. Something like RPi seems to be better placed as a niche product.

So you're saying Ouya store will be available on other devices? "Other Android devices", like those rubbish TV sticks and tablets with god-awful chipsets? Yes, those are viable alternatives to a small box that plugs into your TV

RPi? Yeah they are completely the same thing bro!

LOL your arguments arent that well made, as Ive said before other than price, theres little here that isnt already available on other Android devices, and considering how 'open' it is, I very much doubt the Ouya store will be proprietary just to Ouya, and even if it is, I doubt the apps/games released will only be released for it just considering the shared APIs and relative ease to publish on vanilla Android. Unless such developers arent interested in reaching a much larger market?

RPi like this is a niche product, nothing youve said makes me infer anything but that. Defend the product all you want, not really going to change the reality of the situation.

I can pretty guarantee that I will be able to play Ouya only software on my Note II, with better performance and better controller too.

The joys of Android :)

But if it wasn't for the OUYA, would any devs create Android games that use a controller as opposed to a touchscreen? Even if people aren't interested in the hardware, I'd hope they could see how great it is that there will be an accessible platform for controller based games on Android.

Sure, you can use a PS2 controller and plug the Note II into your TV via HDMI if you want but it's hardly as convenient as having a dedicated console (assuming you enjoy gaming on a big TV while sat on a sofa).

You're probably right about a PS2 controller being better but you don't know that for a fact yet. Some games are bound to use the touchscreen on the controller too so that could be pretty clunky if you're using a tablet and PS2 controller.

Yes, pretty much every FPS and racing game uses a controller already.

There's nothing inconvenient about putting my phone down in front of my TV. My HDMI cable is always there, and I use a wireless PS3 pad.

Really? I wasn't aware there were already Android games specifically designed to use a controller, are they any good?

What if someone calls you? No idea why I put PS2 all the way through that post... brainfart.

I don't have a tablet or a PS3 controller and I'd rather keep my phone for phone use, so the OUYA will be perfect for me.

They'll release a newer improved Ouya every year. So you'll get a better one if you wait :S

Don't think anyone mentioned this.. It's apparently going to be easy to upgrade the components in it so you can just buy and install the parts when you want them.

I'm looking forward to overclocking it. :D

Edit: After reading a bit more into the new versions every year, I'm not so sure it'll be possible to just upgrade the components anymore. :(

If you wait a decade there may be something awesome out that blows the next Xbox and PS4 away ;)

Buy what you like and whatever does the job you want of it NOW and let the future happen.

A bit more info about the games from the recent update:

Kim Swift -- of Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Quantum Conundrum notoriety -- and Airtight Games are developing a brand new, exclusive title for OUYA! Kim writes: “We truly feel that this platform will give us the freedom to fully realize the funky, unique game we have in mind. Though the title will definitely appeal to core gamers in terms of skill and difficulty, it really has a completely unexpected, imaginative slant that's totally at home on this console. Expect an official announcement soon!"

Minority Media, developers of the critically acclaimed Papo & Yo, will deliver their in-development adventure puzzler to OUYA this fall. This is the first game (that we know of) designed to take full advantage of the OUYA touchpad and buttons simultaneously. We’ll need a name for this new style of gameplay. Controlpad … Touchutton ... hmm.

Ever play Killing Floor or Red Orchestra 2? Do you like first-person shooter puzzle games as much as we do? Well, we’re excited to announce that Tripwire Interactive is bringing The Ball to OUYA in March. They’re also working with OUYA on a new, exclusive title. I could tell you more but then I’d have to … well, you know how the saying goes :).

And last … if you’re anything like us, you believe that action and role-playing go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Right? RIGHT? … I’m glad we agree because ChronoBlade is coming to OUYA! We’re working with nWay to bring this beautiful new action-RPG to OUYA’s big screen TV experience. ChronoBlade looks great, and the skill-based combat system puts the “action” back in action-RPG.

Just posted on xbmc

Looked pretty good to me, Aeon Nox, looked to have some judder in it though.
I wonder if this is down to the alpha build of eden and will be ironed out later on? As the mpeg4 file wasn't being decoded through hardware.
I think it's safe to say there's a lot to be improved.
So I'm hopeful they'll get it all running well on the console. I'm looking forward to see what the $99 thing can do!

Yeah that was a handy comment there by nate I'm having some problems with my windows version since I installed the platform update or some other recent windows update. Something seems to have nobbled the software decoding.
