I actually do this a lot now, but it's to do with the way I speak rather than a word I particularly use. I think it rubbed off from someone I have worked a lot with who does it a lot.

Cheers Mate or Thanks Mate, I say to strangers who helped/done something for me...thats about it. However in and around Salford/Manchester they say 'mate' a lot!

"E..R..MATE" is common way of starting a conversation in Salford!

Joking around, nothing serious.

That one word or emotion tells the reader exactly how you want the text to be read. It's just a friendly greeting in other situations. You're all sad anti-social buggers! Would you rather be called mate or the person not even say thanks when you do something for them? Or say 'kidda' or something much more chavy.

I use mate quite a lot, it's just part of my vocab and I don't care if it annoys others.
