Im picked it up when I worked in retail as its a friendly greeting that isnt up there with "sir" that you would use for the older customers. I used ti for to much as have now cut it right back as it ****ed me off so much
Back when we were (immature ) undergraduates, if someone in the group used the word "mate" then people would chant "ooh mate! mate! mate!" in Inbetweeners-style (friend!) at them to humiliate them for their use of the word I don't like it when people call me mate either; seems like a bit of a redundant word to use, especially if I don't know them.
Theres a guy in our office who uses all the web slang while talking! Drives me mad!!!
"Epic win, el oh el that guy had me rofling."
or "i Ce be aye"
For some reason i can not force myself to type 'lol' i hate it! Id much prefer someone tell me it was funny or at least write 'haha.'
Back to the OP, i use 'mate' pretty often, trying to squeeze past someone up here in a club and say 'excuse me sir' you really would get a funny look. Say 'excuse me mate' its fine, everyone see's it as an informal but polite word. I usually replace mate for 'petal' if im honest!
