Overclocked CPU temps

I have overclocked my E8400 to 4.05Ghz with a TPower I-45 and 4gb XMS2 800Mhz ram. This is housed in an Antec 300 with 2 intakes and the stock exhausts on medium setting and I have a Titan Fenrir on the CPU (exhausting out the top).

To get the overclock I have done the following:
Multi - 9
FSB - 450
Ram - 900
Vcore - +0.025 = 1.33ish

My idle temps at average room temps are 42c on Core0 and 35 on Core1. After 9 hrs of Prime small FFT the temps got to 49c on both.

So here are my questions:
1. Is it normal to have such a difference between the two cores at idle?
2. Do my temps seem fine to you guys? I know they are a reasonable level but I expected a higher temp during Prime.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The difference between cores could just be inporper seating of the cpu, but most likely just unaccurate temp sensors for idle.

As you can see from my below pic, my cores under idle never go below 38c no matter how cold ambient is. Lowest ive ever seen my overall cpu temp being was 25c on an uber cold day with my windows open, and cores where still reading 38 lol.

So i would'nt worry about the difference really, especially as it was idle, as u saw they where a lot closer underload, and that is more important.

About max prime temp being 49c, thats about spot on really for your cooler. My max using prime small is 46, under low end water, so your temps are about spot on.

You may want to run prime blend just to make sure your memory is fine running at that speed, as small only stresses ur cpu really.

Nice overclock btw.

49c max? God's teeth man that's nothing to worry about.
Another 15c on top and I'd be looking at better cooling.
Mine runs at 61c max and I'm happy with that, although it never touches that in day to day use including games. :)

So I ran Prime95 Blend test and it only lasted 1 hr 10mins until it found an error. What would you recommend from here? I'm guessing it will definately be the ram that caused it as it ran for 9hrs on the Small FFT test?

Blend stresses everything from cpu,nb, memory.

I would say its either going to be the memory or northbridge, you may have to add abit more volts to both, like an extra notch or so, or depending on the ram itself it may not like running @900mhz at the timings it is at.

From numerous testing on my ram i know it will do 800mhz to 900mhz with 4,4,4,10(12) timings, but anything over 900mhz i have to slacken them to 5,5,5,15.

So basicly its gonna be abit more testing involved really to make it 100% stable.

@bifday2k - on your screenshot of Speedfan, it displays your VChipset as 1.27v which I understand to be the NB voltage. I updates my version to 4.40 and it says my VChipset is only 0.04v? This was even after I upped the NB Volts in my BIOS by 0.025. What am I doing wrong? :)

Is it ok to posy pics from PhotoBucket here? If so, I will show you my readings.

yeh its ok to post pics from any hosting site, you just have to bare in mind the size of the pics really, as not all are using massive screens.

Reallisticly don't worry to much what speedfan shows for volts, aslong as u know what u set in the bios for nb it will be fine.

My rule of thumb is anything upto 400fsb, use stock nb volts (1.2v on my p35 mobo), anything over 400fsb i up it on notch, unless unstability comes in then it gets put abit higher.

The reason i do it like this is that my mobo supports 1600fsb so at stock nb it can easily handle 400fsb. But ofcourse not all S755 mobos support 1600fsb as standard, so each is diff.

The main culprit for ur overclock is either going to be the memory (volts/timings) or nb just needs boosting abit, realisticly not a lot on that mobo its a beast.

Ok so I currently have it at:

4.05Ghz, Multi x 9, vCore + 0.025, NB volts +0.025 (BIOS reads NB as 1.224)

Pic will be comming soon :)

So far your clock is spot on, just not prime blend stable, from reading reveiws on your board, it has a lot more options then my mobo could dream of, and even starts with a lower nb volt.

These would be 2 things id look to try and boost, nb volt, and fsb volt, mine dos'nt have this only realised urs did after reading up on the mobo.

By no means do u have to put them insanely high, but they may need a few more notches, especially as the memory is being overclocked.

Sadly this kind of testing is really annoying to do, as it can take some time, so therefor id suggest running IBT or linx.

Which ever of these you use, both do the same thing, run the test for 20 times on max available memory, will run for max of like 1hour, and is just like a 8hr+ prime run, one note though both will increase the heat of the cpu a lot higher then prime will, so don't be scared if you see core temps into the 60's.

But will be a lot quicker to use then waiting hours and hours with prime, especially as u know the cpu is stable, and ur just gonna be testing memory and nb.

Thanks for all the help. I just ran blend again on the settings I posted today and it only ran for 10mins as opposed to the 1hr 10mins before. I will up the FSB one notch now and see how it goes with blend.

Will also DL Intel burn and see how it goes depending on the next step.

No probs allways glad to help out when i can, all be it im no expert lol.

Hope the on going testing goes well, it can get annoying trying to get stuff proper stable, we have all been there in the past lol.

Good luck
