Barn Owl with breakfast.

could be a jay, hard to tell! *edit..just beaten to it!*

I am not a twitcher as such, its just something I have taken an interest in as I am often out fishing and see lots of things, that to me are just small brown tweety birds, so have decided I need to learn more!

am off to Dumfries next month for a few days as they get big amounts of barnacle geese along he coast , RSPB mersehead is dead easy to to see them , also Marsh harriers, many other waders and big starling murmurations

and binoculars? well I had a chinese 8x42 no name brand which were adequate, but ultimately not great quality, just bought a pair of ZeroTech thrive 8x42 for a real good price in a sale (they are an Aussie firearms optics manufacturer) and the difference is amazing, just better clarity, better in lower light, better made, better strap, better case, proper locking eye cups...well worht it

be a while till my missus says its ok to drop 500 notes on some top quality glass!

A lovely Jay. They share joint #1 with Jackdaws as my favourite corvids. Love the way they fly as it has a nice pattern to it. Plus not as loud and as obnoxious as a Magpie.

We actually found a juvenile on the floor in the woods near our house back in June. As much as I would've loved to have taken it home and have it imprint on me we left it in the woods. Hope the little dude survived. Did go back the following day but it was long gone.

yea definately a Jay - we have two which frequent the area round here. Skittish for the most part, but a lovely bird to look at.

We now have a couple of resident owls who make a racket of a night time shouting at each other, need to record it actually, obviously with it being dark I can't see where it is they're coming from, but the resident massive Oak Tree is a prime candidate.

I like the way bluetit(s) can land on bricks and hang on there. I’ve had a couple land on the corner of my window and have a look around then fly off (presumably when they see me sitting at my desk).

Starlings are back, they remind me of rats. A huge gang of them arrive in my garden and viciously eat all the bird food with bits of it flying all over the place. No other small bids get a look in when they are around, only magpies and crows seem to stand up to them.

Do Jays peck quite a bit? We have some birds that pop in quite often and their behaviour screams woodpecker, but having googled those Jays it could be that too.

Is there a woodpecker that looks like a Jay?

No. A Jay is very very distinctive. Nothing else like a Jay.

But they are corvids. So they are inquisitive birds. It might (if it's a Jay) be exploring.

It may also be looking for your nuts. Jays spent a lot of time caching nuts this time of year

To my knowledge we have two woodpeckers in the UK. I may get the names wrong but I think there is Common Spotted Woodpecker. They're little, have bits of red on them and, shocking no one, they have spots.

I think the other is a European Green Woodpecker. It's larger and green with a red hat on their head

There may, and probably are, other Woodpeckers within the UK but those are the only two I know from the top of my head. I quite like the call of the Spotted one

A mother and young woodpecker on one of the wife's bird tables, they came for a month or so then training was over and they buggered off.

Amazing shots! We get quite a few of them in the nature reserve behind our house. I always thought Woodpeckers, Jays and Kingfishers were rare but they're common as anything down here.
