Overclocking 2500k

Changed speed spectrum and rebooted. Prime is not stressing at 4.5ghz, but dipping in and out of 4.1-4.3, seems happy at 4.2.

Do you think my cooling is inadequate?

no your cooling is fine,it should stay at 4.5ghz without dropping until you stop stressing

did you set each turbo ratio to auto? if the multi still drops then set each turbo ratio to 45x aswell as 45x for the cpu multi then see if it stays at 4.5ghz

Just come back after 5ish mins and the ratio/speed on HwiNFO is showing 4.5, but it's not steady, changing between 4.3 and 4.5. CPU-Z is showing the less irregularity with the multi sporadically changing from 44 to 45.

Yes, the ratio for turbo was set to auto. Temps still look good at 63 max, 60 min.

it might depend on the stress,it will drop on occasion to 4.4ghz esp in prime95

in intel burn test it should stay at 4.5ghz but that program heats up the cpu so only try a standard stress test with it if you wanted to try

temps are fine and voltage

did you cure the fan speed running full pelt?

Not really. There is no direct PWM option in the BIOS but setting the target temp to 65 and the speed to level 9 reduced the overall speed by a small margin. I'm using a TY-147 so it's pretty quiet which is good.

I tested at level 1 and it dropped the fan speed to 790rpm with the CPU temp in the BIOS at 48. I think it's going to be trial and error and some investigation into my board as I'm not all clued up on the new BIOS layouts.

In all fairness, there is going to be little chance of the CPU being stressed while gaming as at 4.2 on BF3, it would get to 75% usage. I may re-evaluate when I get my 7970, but I'll see how 4.5 goes in the mean time. Bit worried it's going to be heat and power all for nothing much of a performance boost.

yeah try each level till its comfortable

youll have to see how it is now over the next few days regarding stability, play a few games ect and post back, maybe you can lower voltages a little more but atm they are decent for 4.5ghz

It's already better than it was before. Idle temp is now 33 where it used to be at least 40-42.

Do you think it would be worth setting the Turbo to a manual x45?

for speed levels, the lower, the slower the fan when the rig is not at load. when u're gaming etc, the fan will still spin up appropriately.

i put my speed level to 3 on my rig = nearly silent. my gpu is the noisest component in my rig lol

What's your spec?

Surely by setting the benchmark at 65deg and the speed level at 9, it should only hit full speed at that temp. Intel burn in is better, but still slight fluctuation with temps hitting only 55.

I think this will be it for now, I'm happy with the results and will test on BF3 later.

could try it see if it makes any difference, but all I do on both my asus/gigabyte boards is set 45x cpu multi and leave all turbo ratio's on auto

but its worth a try to make sure

After testing with IntelBurnIn, I think I'll leave it as it does work. I don't think the CPU will ever get to 100% load in what I'll be doing anyway (Gaming & Photography) so the current setting shouldn't be an issue.

Really appreciate your help though. It's been one hell of a learning curve to say the least.

yeah it will be fine

cpu will only throttle at 100c and your way below that,i like to stay under 80c full load in any stress test so 60-70c is great temps

I thought the thermal throttling kicked in at 60? It may just be my own settings which were showing something like that.

So my next question back to the memory. Assuming XMP is enabled, should I just be looking at changing the VTT to 1.10 and what should this achive?

no,at 100c the cpu will throttle and shutdown the pc to protect itself anything below 100c and it will run but for safety I stay below 80c

vtt is for the integrated memory controller, the moe ram you have usually means more vtt voltage, max safe is 1.2v but you should only need around 1.10v

1.10v will help with ram stability, stock 1.05v is fine for 8gb

I did a 3D Mark 11 run last night, as I'm interested in the performance comparison once my 7970 arrives, and it reported the RAM was running at 800. Is this correct?

If I wanted to overclock my RAM, would it just be a matter of selecting the XMP profile and changing the VTT?

Update: I did change to the XMP by manually selecting it as well as changing the VTT, but the PC failed to boot.
