Overclocking a Q8200 processor

Ok cool! :)

Wow you got some SLOW memory there fella!

DDR2-666 @ 5-5-5-15 is ridiculous! That will have been holding the performance back a lot in almost everything you do on that machine! :(

That should be DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 at the very least for a Quad Core! but maybe your memory can't do that.

I tell ya what, getting you a 4GB set of memory that could run DDR2-1066 @ 5-5-5-15 would really speed things up on that system, and thats even before we begin overclocking! :D

Ok scrap that heh!

Just read your motherboard doesn't support fast ram

Supports Dual Channel DDR2 800/667 x 4 DIMM slots, maximum capacity up to 16GB

Let me know if all the sticks are the same though, I suspect you have two different kinds in there, if you click on the [Slot] drop down under the [SPD] tab in CPU-z you can read info on each stick . . .

I'm not sure why your memory is running at that speed if its DDR2-800? . . it's running as DDR2-666 which is slow these days . . .

ok so what do you reccomend for me then what memory shall i go for on OCuk
Well no, as I posted above the board doesn't *officially* have support for fast ram, that doesn't mean fast ram won't work but it's a gamble unless we can find someone else using your board and ask them.

In the mean time we can try to get the ram you have running at 400MHz (DDR2-800), once we achieve that we can consider overclocking. It may be an idea to remove the two 1GB sticks to make things easier, are you sure all the sticks are DDR2-800 as I think some of them are DDR2-666 because thats what the board has set . .

Let me know, check in CPU-z as posted above or physically remove all the sticks from the machine and read the printed label . . .

You want just the 4Gb (2x2GB) DDR2-800 sticks in there and then you should be able to raise your FSB to 400MHz (1600Mhz SYstem Bus)

7x400= 2.8GHz Processor frequency

i'll keep them and stick in my other comp thats half built in the loft i'll get it out tommorrow and i'll get it built and i'll use it as a guinea pig overclock it and all sorts ...and find out the specs for you too...

cool now probs!

Made sure the 4GB(2x2GB) set are in the slots closest to the CPU, respecting the dual channel colour codes of course! i.e both yellow slots if not already there . . .

Your memory is now 20% faster than what it was! :)

Those timings though are pretty slack, it would be great if we could get them at tighter (lower) timings as that will help speed up the system . . .

To start we would want them to 5-5-5-15, then if that worked we could try getting them to 4-4-4-12 although they may not do this although we could try.

Lets start with DDR2-800 5-5-5-15, your gonna need to read the motherboard manual to work this out maybe! :)
