Hello all, I have 16gb of Corsair Vengeance rated at 1600mhz
Is this the max the ram can run at? or is it possible to overclock it and run it higher like 1800 etc ? is it worth it? is there much to be gained?

I have just purchased the sabertooth z77 motherboard and ivybridge 3770K processor and overclocked to 4.5ghz

When looking at my windows index score it shows my ram at 7.8 and my processor score at 7.8

I can understand its not much to go by and maybe inaccurate but my i7 920 intel and the same ram used to show as both 7.9

Thanks for any help
Cheers

WEI is poo. Ignore it :) Also it's not currently possible to get 7.9 for CPU (unless the arrival of ivy bridge has changed this).

It is possible to overclock RAM, but the performance gains are tiny. I personally don't think it's worth it.

Here is an article which compares the performance of the i7 3770K with different speed memory (including 1600MHz and 1866MHz).

As you can see - in a straight bandwidth test and a memory-heavy application (winrar)test the performance increase is pretty good. However in most applications and games the performance increase from increased memory speed is tiny. Therefore, unless you really like benchmarking or use very memory-heavy applications a lot then I would suggest leaving your memory at stock 1600MHz.

Also +1 for ignoring WEI, it is totally inaccurate and not worth worrying what it says.

Hi there and thanks for the reply, one other issue I noticed was that in the image below you can see my 4.5ghz overclock does not show up:confused:
Normally in the place of the last ghz value I would see the overclock value and as you see it shows 3.5ghz
Is this normal as I have never noticed that before:confused:

It is pretty normal for windows not to show your overclock properly. So long as CPU-Z shows the overclock is working then you are fine.

Why do people care about the Windows Performance Index? It's useless... my SSD fluctuates between 7.4 and 7.7 when I update it. My 7950 goes between 7.8 and 7.9 also - Let's face it, it should be about 7.7 or 7.8 max considering there are better cards out there like the GTX 680, HD 6990, HD 7970 etc.

I can understand what your saying but I just found it strange how my old i7 920 and the same ram was showing as 7.9  unless they increased the scoring recently?
Anyway no biggy :)
Thanks all

Yeah, they must have. Either way it's not reliable based on the stats it's given me. ;)
