I am thinking of overclocking my graphics card but want peoples suggestions as to what level of overclocking is possibly worthwhile, i.e. what might make a difference to fps when playing?

I have overclocked prior graphics cards by 5-10% on memory/ gpu typically (using ati tool) and am wondering if I was just wasting my time!:rolleyes:
 
I assume your current GPU is the X1900XT listed
What games do you play?
What resolution do you game at?
Have you overclocked your CPU?
 
Games playing: FEAR, COD4, unreal 3, Prey (and half life 1 :))
CPU not overclocked
play at 1600x1200...
 
At that level of res. you should imo :-
1) Overclock your cpu - will give a nice boost in some games - a 30% boost of cpu speed should be attainable without many problems (so I've read - run s939 for self so have no personal experience of am2).
2)Sell existing gpu and buy either 8800gt or 3870

Nothing against overclocking a gpu but have not found such adds a great deal - 10% on a good day say.
Then again I do not overclock within an inch of life so possibly more there.

If really serious about o'clocking current card have a google at some of the reviews of your card , quiet common now for reviewers to o'clock.

Some members who own the card might be kind and advise how succesfull they have been

I am worried over clocking mu cpu might have an adverse effect on my m/b and I only have a standard cooler

what sort of fps boost have you got from o/c the cpu?

it might be best to not overclock anything and just wait until I find a good deal on a 3870...
 
I'm not sure on how much of a difference you would see at 1600x1200 but I think you should be able to get about 2.5 - 2.6Ghz from the stock cooler as long as your CPU scales well without having to up the voltage much. Even if you have to buy a cooler you could get the Freezer Pro from Arctic Cooling (I'm sure OCUK stock them and they're cheap and work great, my mum has my X2 3800 at 2.75Ghz with this cooler, runs at 2.8Ghz but just reduced it a little to prevent problems).
